A friend just dropped off some deer meat for us and while I am so appreciative, I have no clue how to cook it. They said it's a ham. I have 4 that are about 2-3lbs each. Any ideas? Thanks!

Fry it in a pan! Cook it the same way you would with any other meat.

Thanks guys. Steph, it's free. I can't be picky, even though I have to not think about Bambi! Course, I love Babe too, but he tastes REALLY good!

I personally am not a fan of the taste of deer meat. I have tried it different ways, but I can handle chili made from deer meat.

I have found that you've gotta mix it in something. My DH just made some in the crock pot a couple of weeks ago. Cream of mushroom soup, soy sauce, worchesire sauce, onion soup mix, and some seasoning salt. Cook until tender and it made a nice gravy that you can serve with rice, potatoes, or noodles. Another recipe is golden mushroom soup and the meat and cook on 350 in the oven for 5 or 6 hours I think and serve with whatever you want. You can cut it up and put it in chilli. Good luck and happy cooking!!

I am a backwoods girl from south Georgia. We lived on deer meat. Hunting was a huge thing. I do not recommend frying it. Deer meat can get very very tough if you fry it. I agree that sausage is the best! Also crock pot cooking is a great way to make it tender.

My dh goes hunting too and for most of our married life, ground deer is the meat we have in the freezer! We grind it up and add 1/4-1/3 fatty pork. You can usually get pork shoulder for pretty cheap during hunting season. You actually want a cut that is really fatty to offset the dryness of deer. That's pretty much all I use.

In my other house my neighbor used to carve up the deer himself and bring it over..My favorite way to eat it is in a Stew using the crock pot..Very tender

If you cook it as a roast or tips, soak it in milk or buttermilk. It will take the gamey taste out of it and you will enjoy it more! I do agree with everyone else.....have it ground up or make jerky.......jerky is awesome and very frugal! The boys would love it!!

My brother cooks deer meat I pesonally don't eat it but my son and SO loves it. I know he soaks his in vinegar, salt, and water to draw most of the blood out of it for at least 24 hours before he marinates and cooks it. He changes (drains) the water 2-3 times and adds more salt and vinegar to it and they say it you can't even taste the wild taste when he cooks it. You might can do a search and find a recipe for it.

Although I have never cooked or eaten venison, my sister has and she swears by Allegro marinade. I think you really have to marinate it in something to get rid of the gaminess.

I LOVE venison!!!! We eat it all the time. I've cooked it in bbq sauce and made sandwiches with it. I've sliced it in thin strips and made a stir fry out of it and served it over rice. I've cooked it with peppers and onions for a beefsteak type sandwich melting some provolone over the top. I love my venison roasts with the golden mushroom soup. I've thrown them in the pressure cooker and about 20 min before the meat is done, I quick cool it and take the top off and throw in my potatoes & carrots and then put it back on the heat. You can always google venison recipies....those are some of my favorites.

2-3lbs would make a good roast or stew. I definitely agree that it needs to be cooked slowly. Happy cooking, Bette.

I agree to soak it in milk or buttermilk for 12-20 hrs to get rid of gamey taste....if you soak it too long though it gets even tougher. I've made chili out of it & even the IL's didn't realize it was deer; love it as a roast but didn't like it with a lot of garlic (very rare for us, we love our garlic) I also like it mainly as ground meat to replace hamburger but sadly my dad didn't get a deer this year & I must be weird; I don't like deer sausage--but my uncle gets it made into summer sausage, maybe that's why.

I could not go out and kill the deer, but once it is dead there is nothing to do but eat it. We always soak ours in Mt. Dew, and definately cook it slowly.

I put my deer roast in a Crock-Pot with lots of Soy Sauce, Chopped onion, and Garlic for 8 hours. At the last hour or two hours (depending on how firm you like it) add sliced bell peppers. MMMM MMMM Pepper Steak over Rice YUMMO
