| Walgreens Letter
Managers, We have had a number of complaints recently about the acceptance of coupons in our stores. Most of the time the complaints are about clearance items, but this situation can happen with any item in the store. If a customer presents a coupon that has a higher value than the product purchased, the coupon can be accepted. The cashier will have to key in the lesser value of the product and hit the mfg coupon tender key on the register. The cashier also must write on the coupon the actual value of the product if it is less than face value of the coupon. As always the customer is responsible for any sales tax due on the item(s). Example: Customer picks up an item that is priced 49 cents. The customer also has a coupon for the item valued at 55 cents. Cashier rings up the item, verifies the coupon is for the item purchased, the correct size, and that the coupon is not expired. The cashier tries to scan the coupon, but the register does not accept the coupon. The cashier, double checking that the coupon is for the product being purchased, now types in the amount of the actual item (49 cents) and hits the mfg coupon tender key. The cashier, after finishing the transaction, needs to also write on the coupon the amount the coupon was actually taken for (49 cents). Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you, Christopher Leach |

Why do they bother to type it? How many times have you handed a cashier a store coupon that has simple instructions on what to type into the register and they just glare at it and call a manager and ask them what to do? Nobody reads this stuff.. It's nice to have the letter but when you bring it to them, they won't read it anyway. Frustrating, but what can you do? |

OK, this is where you use the trusty "cell phone" threat. Ex: "Cashier: I can't accept this. It would make it free or it is worth more than the pp You: I am confused (look dumb). I recieved a letter from Christopher Leach about this and he stated..... Cashier: I think I should call manager This is where things usually deteriorate--re-state that you had run into this situation before. That is why you wrote to CL. He stated in his letter to you....blah, blah, blah. Manger still saying no? "Well, I am so confused. I think I had better call the corporate office (whip out cell phone), and what exactly is your name, position and store #? I just really want to make sure I understand the policy since what you are telling me is different than the corporate office." Usually by then, they have had it with you and take anything you give them. This is when you smile and say thanks, I will be sure to let the office know how accomodating you were. I will be back in soon! "That was the nice suburban housewife scenario. Now, vary the details as need be but never shop without the cell phone! |

If I recall correctly from the OP on the other board, Christopher Leach is a regional manager & his name might not work in all areas of the country...but no reason you couldn't bring up the letter without using his name & use your cell phone to call someone yourself! Anyone else remember reading the OP elsewhere for this? |
