In Chicago the tax rate is a whopping 11.25% and in the surrounding suburbs it is 10.25% so I am boycotting shopping in Chicago and walking across the street to the suburbs to save! The added tax is killing us. Why do we have the highest rate, because we have politicians that need a pay raise so we get it where it hurts the most.

we are in the south suburbs of chicago and it's not much cheaper. Our next move is going to be Will County! Cook County is just killing us with property taxes and sales tax. when they wanted to tax bottled water, I just about fell off my chair. Everything is just getting so out of control.

Sorry, I didn't mean to brag. I have only lived in Or for 1 1/2 years. I grew up in NY where it was 8.5%

OMG 11%! Ours just got raised to 6.75%, some areas to 7.25%.

We thought we had it bad in NE OH 6.25%. Chicago is ridiculous!!!!

We have 6% in WV, I think food tax is down to 4%. When I used to live in TX I think they didn't have tax either, that was in the '80's don't know about now.

PA - 6%...no tax on food (unless "prepared") or clothing

6.5% here in southwest MN, no tax on clothes or food (unless prepare).

In Chicago they tax EVERYTHING! I never heard of not paying tax on merchandise regardless of what it is. Our food tax is 2.25%.

In an effort to get people to use water from the tap because everytime you run your water they tack on a sewer fee, the city council came up with this brilliant tax on bottled water. So if you buy a bottle you get an extra .5 cents tacked on. People are laughing at that tax and running to the burbs to buy water. The Walgreens I went to this morning is across the street from Chicago and they had a LCD sign saying "No Chicago bottled water tax." Now really if you cross the street you don't have to pay the stupid tax. Yes, we have the cream of the stupidity crop in our politicians.
