| Advice needed....payment never received UPDATE
OK...it's a fairly long story, but I'll try to make it quick. I'm an elem teacher and I hosted a student teacher second semester (Jan-May). It was from a university that my school has not worked with in several years (because they were in the past very disorganized and difficult to work with.....and still like that now). But it was a special request from our district office to try again, so we agreed. I was the only teacher at my school who hosted from that partiular university. Anyway.....at the orientation session they asked the teachers (about 9 of us total, none that I know) to fill out a 10-99 for the IRS because "even though (they) could never compensate (us) adequatley for the time and work it takes to host a student teacher, (they) would like to provide us with a small token of (their) gratitude at the completion of the semester". That's all that was said....no dollar amount...actually, no mention of "real" money at all, but that's what I assumed because of the form we filled out. Later into the semester my student teacher said she'd heard it was $250, but didn't know for sure. Well....the student teachers graduated at the beginning of May, we've been out of school sine the beginning of June, and still nothing from the university. I was really looking forward to receiving SOMETHING for my time and effort. The main university we work with gives cooperating teachers a free class, which is a really big deal. I was hoping for something. I don't know who to ask about it, though. My principal knew nothing about the compensation and I don't know any of the other teachers who hosted. I could e-mail someone at the university, but don't know what to say that wouldn't make me look bad, ya know? Any advise?? Thanks so muh if you made it to the end of this!! UPDATE: Got a response back today to my e-mail...said she would look into the status of my CHECK today and get back to me!

[quote] I would call the university and just explain that you remember having to fill out a 1099 and were just curious for tax purposes if something had been sent, because you hadn't received anything. If the answer is no, you could always tell them that the other universities have offered a free class and tell them that would be of interest to you as well. Don't feel guilty. You're just going off something that was explained at the orientation. You even had to fill out tax info!! Having a student teacher is a big commitment on your part. I hope it went well for you. Either way, you deserve something! |

I agree with amcguirk - definitely contact them. Especially since they had you fill out the paperwork -

I think that's a big part of it.......it was an AWFUL experience for me, both with the intern, as well as getting support from the university when there were problems. Makes me REALLY want to get something out of the deal, ya know? I like the idea of sending an e-mail about the 1099 and taxes, I'll try that. Thanks!

If I was asked to fill out a 1099 I would be looking for $600 and above. Called the university and tell them you filled out the 1099 and did not hear anything and was wondering when and if they were sending out checks for the time you spent at the event. I would try to speak to someone and not send an e-mail. It can't hurt you may get paid.

Universities should compensate teachers well when you consider the student teacher is paying tuition that semester and not taking any classes there.

Good! Definitely worth contacting them! I'd be curious to hear how much they give... I don't think teachers around here get much. I never had a full student teacher. I had a few who were sophomores and juniors that would come for a few weeks. It was extra work on my part and I would just get a Barnes & Noble gift card. I understand that a lot of it is doing our part to help others, and I am thankful for those who mentored me. I just think Universities & colleges go compensate the cooperating teacher a little more - JMO
