Very sad!!! I cannot believe that so many people are still living in FEMA trailers!! It angers me so much, everytime I think of all those children living like that I start to cry. How are they supposed to grow up as proud Americans, ya know?

And I love this part the best..."Community groups say thousands of people are still living in abandoned buildings in the city, though fewer than 100 people remain housed in tents."

So that is a big accomplishment or something...that 3 years later there are still 100 people living in freakin tents?????? WTH? Now ya got me goin Noahsmomma!!

I am not disputing the accuracy of the report, but I am in Louisiana and I have to New Orleans multiple times since the hurricane. I don't know of people still living in tents...I wonder where they are hiding these people and the tents? The state is doing it's best to get people out of the trailers. There is a FEMA trailer park a few miles from here and people are still living in the trailers even though they have been told that they are a health hazard and they need to leave.

I guess living here, we just see it a little differently.

Many of the people who were told to leave the trailers were renters before the hurricane so they didn't get an insurance settlement like homeowners did to establish a new home. Many of them are elderly or disabled, but they have established these parks as their homes now and don't want to leave. This is a link to a local story, the few left in the trailers are being offered apartments and hotel rooms:

I am in Ms and as soon as about 2 months ago, people are still living in tents on the Gulf Coast. I am not sure that it is accurate to say 100 families, but I do know some are. They are actually living on their land in the tents.

It makes me mad, because our town Deridder, LA took in Katrina victims...they were moved from our town to Texas when Hurricane Rita was coming. We fled 2 days after Rita. I miss LA, so much......FEMA failed US and so did our Govt. ..but that's just my opinion

I believe that the Gov't did fail some people. I also believe that some of the people that ended up in this situtation thought it would be there lottery of sorts and just get paid for the act of God. Which I find very upsetting.
Bad things happen to people that is a fact of life. But if your capable of getting up and getting a job try helping yourself also. Don't just expect a hand out.

Ok sorry about the rant.

I want to know why all those goods were wasted. I could think of a lot of people acros the country could have used it.

Well I can tell you from my personal experience here~when we went to get FS like the news said we could and we needed, they didn't want to help use because all our records were ruined(Birth certs. ect). Acted like we were scamming them. We were treated rudely. They said "did you go to Red Cross yet? " We said no we were told to come here 1st". They sent Us away. So we went to RC. They were super nice! They gave us a GC . And we had to buy clothes. They only clothes we had were summer because in LA it's warm/hot most of the time. Here in NY..brr cool, cold in Oct. RC told us to go back and get FS we were entitled for 1 month. And we did. DH got a job in about a week and I reported it. We were still able to get FS because DH still didn't make enough for our size family. But then FS cut us off. When I called them they said "oh you have to apply again, and you need you paper work." I didn't even bother with it a 2nd time because La Vital records were still under water. I was able to get our records but not until January of the next year. Oh and RC introduced me to a lady at low income housing. We didn't get housing but she asked me what we needed. I said all I wanted was for DH to find a better job that paid more, so we could get a place to live. She made a few calls and a company hired DH for 1 year as an Project Manager. This happened 1 month after we got here. So my feeling is some people just don't want to do their jobs...and they work for the State(NY) and Govt(FEDS). And then you have the people that go ABOVE and beyond that help people. I personally sent thank-you cards to the lady that help DH. & RC. I filed a complaint against the FS stamp people when they gave me the run around. And that's when they gave them to us for the month.

This is so like FEMA. After Rita hit us we applied for everything that we could to survive. FEMA was doing Property damage and was told to us they would be out to look at our home. No One ever Showed up ....9 months later when we moved to another state DH got a job offered. FEMA comes out to the property and denies us any Funds b/c there was no home. Well no crap ...It was damaged and unliveable to live in so it had to be torn down ...No given credit to the bills we had or even the spot where the house once laid nor the elec pole or the butene tank we had outside. They wouldn't accept the pictures as a proof of the damage. WE were denied everything!!! Even more than a 4 diapers that the red cross was handing out. My son goes thru more then 4 diapers in one day!!!
As, far as Katrina goes we donated everything we had supplied for Hurricane Katrina to the survivers that were living in tents at the local state park. I handed mothers cans of infant formula b/c they were limited to the quanities they were given. We then went to the civic center that was by our house and asked someone if they needed someplace to go ..WE had an extra bedroom. I'll never forget this woman come up to me and asked if she could have one of the baby foumulas as they were hoaring everything from the needy.

So Shame on FEMA .it was a headache just to come out of this alive, but to have to be denied just food and water for you and your children is wrong. I do feel for those few who are out on the streets now. It took everything we had to stand up on our two feet again ALONE! No help from the GOVERNMENT and surly no help from FEMA.
I wouldn't wish this on anyone .
I do hope that those who are still struggling come out on the brighter side.

And I will add......When we fled...it was so eerily similar to your story.....they finally got a National Guard into our town to hand out 1 bag of Ice & 1 gallon of Water to each family....The National Guard Troops stood GUARD with their M-16's in their arms pointed toward everyone like we were going to riot...come on this was a town of 10,000.....there were about 300 people that stood in line for that water and ice...that they ran out of.....Glad I didn't waste my time! Still miss my home state, and cheap rent, but Never want to go through that again.

Still miss my home state, and cheap rent, but Never want to go through that again.
Cheap Rent Pffff!! since both hurricanes they have jacked up the prices on the rent or at least where I'm from.
Yea,I remember once going to get ice and food and the guy was like stay in the car or I'll shoot...GEEZ!! I wasn't going to grab up all the food or anything
Taxes has gone up to 9.25% since the hurricane. I just couldn't believe it and I was just there 2 weeks ago .
But I still miss it greatly. I did get my helping of boiled crawfish while I was there. I tipped the man just for letting me smell inside his building . But it has been awhile since I've had it too.....just had to smell the wonderful cookings...

That Sucks!! Do you believe people are still fighting their insurance companies. I can't believe!!
We didn't have insurance and If we did we would have not gotten much from it at all. It was a nice house on a nice piece of property. It was paid for! But like you mold took over and the harder we tried to get rid/replace it ..It was hard to dig deeper with no help.
So we tore it down and sold what we could for scrap. Rebuilding was just a dream of the past.
We'll make it back sooner or later.
I just hope the GOV. took a real hard look at themselves and plan on helping someone else in the same situation later on the down the line.

Where were you from Noah's mom??
