Can a Roku replace cable?

I'm really wanting to cut our cable bill and get a Roku for watching shows, but my wife is freaking out. She thinks we will miss out on what we currently watch, which we always record on Tivo.

Will we loose any shows? We don't have premium channels now. My wife loves watching the murder/crime shows, so that is a must.

I cut the cable to basic and got a roku last month. There are some things that I miss. The biggest so far is the pause button I had with DVR and the channel guide.

We tried Hulu plus and it was terrible. We have Netflix and like it, although it's missing more shows and movies than I expected because they aren't allowed to stream them to TV.

The real challenge is going to be when fall TV starts and I have multiple shows a night I want to watch. I plan to watch them online. Hopefully it will work out.

The cable bill sure looks better. Goodluck

Absolutely! It's been a year and a half that I got rid of cable and rely solely on my Roku! I would recommend getting Netflix, and then PlayOn TV on your Roku. Netflix is a monthly $7.99 fee and when I bought by PlayOn subscription it was $19.99/year. With PlayOn I can stream Hulu, and many other channels available on tv such as CBS, NBC, etc. The only thing I've missed about not having cable is I'm not able to watch football, but I can even find that on-line so it's not bad.

I ended up buying a 2nd Roku for my son's room, and other than the fee of the Roku there's no additional cost for multiple tv's. Good luck!

I have never heard of roku, tell me more people, please!
We have hulu but just the free stuff online and we had netflix, but never really used it except for the kids stuff. I don't really miss cable since our kids are little we don't get to watch it much, now if I could just get my internet bill cheaper!!

It's a box that hooks to the TV and streams things link Netflix and hulu plus.

Good luck getting the internet down. When I called Comcast to downgrade the cheapest internet they would offer was 69.00 a month.

I don't have roku but something similar and in my opinion better. I use an Imation link. I cut cable out 3 years ago. Was hooking up my laptop to tv via hdmi cable. Did some research and bought the imation and have not regretted once cutting the cable. Its a wireless usb device. I do not pay for hulu plus, netflix or any other paid sites. Everything streams for free right off my laptop onto my tv. This site has every show broadcasted on every channel. I also watch movies before they are released on DVD on this site as well. The great thing about this site is they have all the popular prime time shows and you also have the opportunity to wach previous series if you missed them. Plus the imation you're not restricted. Great quality video's and no stuttering or lagging.

I would definetely recommend cutting the cable. Do some research and see what product is best for you and your family. You won't regret it.

We have mediacom and I used to pay only $19.95 and then they upped it to $50 but offer new customers $9.95 (which is crap, why not KEEP the customers they have???) so we are shutting our service off when we move Oct 1st and pray that they will make us an offer to come back. (I have heard of them doing this for some people even after saying they cannot give a lower price)

If you have a wii you can also watch netflix on it. We only have netflix but you can easily catch up on all your shows on cbs.com fox.com abc.com etc. The only thing about fox is you have to wait a week to watch the current episode. We only pay 30 a month through sudden link for internet.

Have they changed cbs.com? The last time I tried watching episodes on there it was a no go because they weren't posting then up. They used to let you but unless something changed or they only did it for specific shows, I wasn't able to.

Yeah, no cheap internet in our area either, sadly. It's because it's a college town - we currently have just internet and it's just under $60/mo - where we live you have the option of Comcast or Frontier....both will take your first born if you let them....

So, the Roku will stream sites like free Hulu, abc.com, cbs.com, fox.com etc? Or only paid subscription type sites like Hulu Plus or Netflix?

Is AT&T U Verse available in your areas? We have the highest speed at a rate of $24.99 a month. This is not a promo rate.

Roku has restrictions on sites that you can go on. That is why I did not purchase Roku, apple, or other devices similar. I'm not sure what sites are restricted or which they allow to stream but you can ask users on here their experiences.

Sites that I can stream off my imation is everything. There are zero restrictions. Sites that I frequently visit are sidereel, watch free series, tv links.com, etc.... There are many to list. Beware though that whenever streaming or on the internet you are susceptible to viruses, so I caution you to have a malware antivirus, norton antivirus, mcaffe, etc....

I use AT&T but not Uverse and my rate jumped this month to $44! Is U verse unlimited? My son is a game designer. I'm terrified of getting a $2,000 bill for overage!

I ditched cable 5 months ago. It was nearly $200 a month for phone, tv, and Internet through Comcast. I now pay just under $60 for internet only to the evil Comcast (my only choice). We use Netflix and Hulu plus through the wii. We can watch the current shows one day after they air on Hulu plus. We mostly use Netflix for the kids. We do miss bravo, Disney, CBS, and some others. I did subscribe to play on as well, but the quality was pretty poor. It's been torture not to be able to watch all of the Olympics though!

Remember rabbit ears if you drop cable. You can still get local channels through the air for free. Then supplement with hulu or netflix.
