| Jury Duty
Today I got a letter stating I have to report May 29th 2012 at 8am to the local courthouse for jury duty! Ugh this couldn't have come at a worse time because if I have to be a juror on an actual case it would affect my clinicals! I want to finish my degree on time so this is most inconvenient. Has anyone else ever been summoned or served on a jury? Whats involved, besides a lot of waiting?

I have been summoned several times but never even had to report. I just had to call at the beginning of each week for instruction. There is no getting out of jury duty around here, but you can delay. I was able to postpone one week because we would have been on vacation. Call ahead, be very nice, and just ask for a delay. They are much nicer if you do not try to say you cannot serve at all.

I've been summoned once, if not twice and I always sent a letter stating I was unavailable due to school. I don't know if different states have different rules, but in CA, school was a legitimate reason to get out of it. Read the fine print and see if you can send a postponement or request to be dismissed letter.

You should be able to call & tell them you are in school. They should excuse you. Here in TX you can do that. When I was called, I asked my dr. to write a letter asking them to excuse me since I have a chronic desease & have no immune system. Can't be around all those people..

I'm in nursing school too. I was summoned last month, and I just sent them a letter stating that I was in school and could not attend. I made sure I included the name of the school and the school's phone number in case they needed to verify anything with the school. A week later I got a phone call that said I was excused from jury duty. It can't hurt to send them a letter and see what happens! I know with my school, we can't miss more than 10% of class each semester or we are dropped from the program. If we do miss even one day we have to make it up by coming to school on semester break, or if we miss clinicals they have to schedule a clinical day with a hospital for us to make it up on our break. I am not willing to miss any days unless it's absolutely necessary! |

In MA you are able to postpone for up to a year, you should definately call, I bet you could get it postponed b/c of you clinicals, I went twice, just have to make sure you have change for parking and cash on you for lunch, and something to read, it is boring. Good luck

I was wondering who do I call or write to? The space to write on the mail in letter is for the following question: Do you have any disability that might disqualify you from serving as a juror? I thought this met physical disability. There is a phone number but it is for calling the weekend before the date to verify if you've been cancelled or not. Would I tell them? Or write to the courthouse?

I would call that number, heck they should be able to answer your questions or give you a # to call to find out.

I understand you have school and you want to finish on time...good for you!!! I just wanted to add my two sense in and say I was just on jury duty a few months back. All I can say is that I really enjoyed being able to just catch up on some computer time and just relax. I know alot of people may think that sounds silly but I just needed a break from all the craziness of everyday life. And what a better way to do that then to be stuck in a room with no one you no or are commited to talk with. ( sounds very selfish) but I really needed a break. I did talk with a few people but for the most part.(time for myself) I brought my computer and really enjoyed my quiet time. I was not choosen for jury duty and I was only there a full day but I'll be quite honest with you I would take a few more days like that. Good luck with your schooling and best wishes to you!

I get called at least once a year for jury duty - you would think as big as Orlando is they would find someone else to call. You don't need to call all you do is fill out the card and attach a note that you are in school and have your clinicals and need to ask to be excused and that you would appreciate them delaying your service for say 6 months. I have never had them deny a request. They are just glad that people actually respond and show up like they are suppose to. Now I will tell you that your juror number will be a lower number when you do serve which means you will be called for whatever jury they need first. If you don't delay it you usually won't even get called out of the main room (bring a laptop or smart phone).

| Not to go off topic... but luck you! I was on jury duty with my boss (who just also happens to be my former Mother In Law) for two days I was in a room next to her LOL It really would have been better had they told us that we could take our laptops and my crochet (they specifically said no no no to all those things on the paper but when you went in it was OH you could have brought it and we have a separate room set up with wifi for people waiting.. grr!).
