Etsy Vs. Ebay

I'm looking into opening store front on either Etsy or Ebay. I sell handmade jewelry and my items are around the $3-$5 range. What kind of experience have any of you had with either of these sites? I've used ebay as a buyer before. I have a Paypal account so I can use either. Any feedback would be awesome! Thanks a lot!

etsy's fees are WAY cheaper for a longer posting time and since you are selling items with a small dollar amount that might work best. I'm not sure how much traffic they get compared to ebay, but I think by now it's pretty well known. There could be ALOT of competition on etsy since it's known as the crafting site, but that might also make it the place that ppl look for stuff like that. In my opinion I'd post on etsy (I've got some stuff on there now), and maybe post on craigslist with links for ppl to see your stuff. And post on facebook, etc with links for ppl to view and buy. and maybe pay a little extra to advertise your store, they offer a couple different promotional packages.

I compared prices and Etsy was about .10 higher in the prices than Ebay. I am just trying to figure out a way to get my products to my customers. I have a fan page on Facebook but not everyone is or wants to be on Facebook.

Been a long time since I've listed on ebay and I've never listed anything in your price range, usually higher, so that may be why I thought etsy was cheaper. Now on etsy - I believe it's .20 to list something for 3 months right? And I've only done 7 day auctions on ebay and those always cost me .50 or more, SOOOO what would it cost for a longer buy it now type of thing on ebay?? Would the .20 justify the longer listing? And I don't remember how much the commission price was on etsy, sorry I don't seem to be much help. And I guess I mentioned facebook and craigslist and additional marketing to go along with the etsy or ebay..... I see ppl do this quite a bit, just helps direct ppl to those websites. I wouldn't rely solely on facebook, just an additional tool.

I don't know if there is a right answer - I've started selling things at craft shows in the last couple of years and to be honest, jewelry would not be my first craft for the simple reason - there are ALOT of ppl making jewelry and/or different companies (like premier designs) that have salesppl ALL over the place. There is ALOT of competition, so I don't know where or what you have to do to stand out. Being that your pieces are so reasonably priced and I don't know how much profit margin you have to work with, I'd almost try both websites, and see how they do. Both of them allow for keeping track of how many visitors you have. Another thing you might do, if you have ways of packaging it cutesy/pretty and you can find some time to visit flower/gift shops, you might be able to consign it in different places.

I'd go with etsy!

It seems that you've got really, really FAIR pricing and there are a lot of sellers on etsy that are asking very steep prices.
I get that it's handmade and everything, but if you look on there the prices are crazy.

I think you'd do well on etsy just on your pricing alone.

Thanks! I have about 20 customers right now but about half of them don't have facebook and can't see my pictures of my items. If I can find a way to display my items somewhere without it costing me and arm and a leg that would be fantastic. I have a website that I created with yolasite.com but I find it very hard to navigate and change things. My profit margins aren't very much depending on what someone buys but I typically get awesome deals on my supplies.

Thanks for your input! I am thinking of leaning more towards Etsy. I have looked at some of the items on there to kind of compare and you are right, the prices are outrageous! I think the most I ever charges was $12 and that was on a 4 piece set!

i would try ebay and try listing in different category's like crafts handcrafted items and also in jewelry. you can also very easily create a facebook page with all your ebay listings. also try listing as a buy it now and if you can print your shipping labels it would help. ebay is making changes in may, top rated sellers get a boost in search results when you ship within 1 day and also offer a 14 day return policy.

Since you said your looking for a way to reach your customers beside Facebook have you tried making a site on blogspot or webs? Both are free and are easy to navigate. I've seen people have good luck on etsy but the main thing I always hear about is lack of traffic. It never hurts to try though and see what happens.

I do have a website that I run for free but it is very complicated for me to update the site and I can't figure out how to add a checkout cart or payment screen or anything. LOL

Lol. I seen that you had said that so I figured I would suggest ones that may be a lot easier. It might be worth it then to have an etsy shop and have the pictures from your site link to the listing in your shop. Thus cutting out the need for the cart and payment buttons. I've don't have any experience with the site you mentioned, just the ones I mentioned, but you may be able to Google a how to for the payment stuff.

I think you'd do well on etsy just on your pricing alone.
I don't think your prices are fair at all! You're valuing your own time far too little! The reason items on etsy are priced "so high" is that the artists are well trained and value their work. Figure out what you earn per hour if you sell a piece for $3. Factor in the cost of materials, the time it takes to design a piece, and the time it takes you to make it. If you're not earning around minimum wage, you're priced too low. Look at the prices others are charging for similar items. You could be making much more money.

Sorry if that seems long or at all hostile, but I'm an artist and I hate watching people let their work be taken advantage of. Even if it's just a fun side project for you, it's harmful to everyone when someone doesn't value their skills and their time appropriately, because then everyone else is expected to as well.

To be honest, as a frequent etsy buyer, I would expect any item priced for $3 to be poorly made from cheap materials, and I wouldn't buy it. I'm sure that isn't what you're selling, so don't give that impression!

Again, please don't be offended, I'm trying to help you make more money!

Bluegoddess has a point - I don't buy jewelry so I don't know what it costs to make/buy but I'm guessing you could easily increase your pricing and still sell it. When I worked retail, we sold everything for double it's wholesale value. If I were you I'd consider figuring out what your supplies cost you and then double it - but when figuring cost, I'd figure normal retail cost, if you got the item (beads, wire, etc) on sale, just consider that a bonus. You might even be able to add a little more money on if your supplies are inexpensive, like I said, I have no idea what they cost, so my suggestion might not be enough either. You may not ever price as high as others but I'd sure bump your prices up. And you can keep your pricing different for different places, if you want to continue to sell on AFC or to friends for a little less, that's your choice, but if you are going to put this much effort in, get a little more reward.

Thanks ladies! I take no offense at all for any suggestion. I have gotten that comment a lot at how cheap I have my prices. It really doesn't cost me that much to make these items. Maybe .50 total for a pair earrings or so and it only takes me 10-15 minutes to complete it. I would charge $3 for it So my profit would be around $2 or so but my problem is also wanting to keep the shipping down too so I end up paying for some of the shipping out of pocket so that eats into my profit too.

I totally understand your thinking about items being so cheap that they could be preceived as being poor quality. I've been doing some thinking and trying to figure out what I need to change without upsetting any of my customers.

i agree with the post about being only $3 so they think it's cheap. can you add some bling or something to make them worthy of more money? or sell multiple pairs of earings in different colors or necklace sets with earrings. you would need to charge more money on ebay to make a profit. you can also search ebay for similar items and to the left you will see completed sales check that box and it will show you what has sold and how much. i am sure you could sell for more money if you listed a little different or made them a little different. my friend handmakes jewelry and she sells a necklace and earrings for $15 locally.

Honey, just did my taxes for ebay and was not pleased to figure out that although I had almost $12K in sales, made very little comparatively. I have artistic friends who sell on Etsy and they have been pleased. Value your work then maybe branch out to ebay. Ebay is too competitive and expensive for sellers right now. Sorry to say.

best wishes to you...you will do well. stay encouraged and reach for the stars...WOMEN DOING THEIR THING!! Love it!

OH I have been told that I could easily increase my prices to $5 per pair and most people would pay that without blinking an eye about it. I do make some earrings and bracelets that contains crystals and those earrings I charge $1 more for.

I knew your prices that you ask were low, I didn't know they were that LOW.

Raise 'em up!

I agree with the $5 or more price increase per pair

Maybe offer your regular customers some sort of deal or incentive? Like even though you raise the prices if they bought more then one or two maybe a % off or something? So it still seems like they are getting a good deal but paying a bit more
