| Anyone familar with Roku?
So with all this mess happening with Netflix, we are starting to look around for another tv alternative. We have a Xbox360 and stream Netflix from there but since they are possibly losing their Starz contract come March we want to see what else is out there. Has anyone ever heard of Roku? Or does anyone have it? What do you think about it?

Roku is basically the same as using a Wii or Xbox as I remember correctly, to use for Netflix and I believe now for Hulu Plus as well. I know people that have it and love it, but mainly use it for Netflix |

I use Netflix right now but with them cancelling the Starz programming in March it won't be worth it to us anymore.

My in-laws use Roku and are happy with it, but they mostly just watch the news and stuff. My Aunt (in-law) has it and loves it, she watches tons of movies with it. Ive messed around with it while visiting their house and it seems like a good product.

Our kids watch 80% of the programing from Netflix on Starz. And a lot of the movies we watch are on there too. That's why we are starting to look for an alternitive.

My dad has a Roku box and he loves it, but he is a complete gadget/ technology nerd. I think you can order whichever packages you want from it, some are free though. Amazon streams a lot of free movies thru it too.

I have one and love it. Got it last month for 99 bucks at Best Buy, it's the newest one and it includes Angry Birds. You have to have a high speed internet connection for it to work. I subscribed to Netflix Streaming for 7.99/month and Amazon Prime for 79/year with it. The Amazon Prime includes free streaming tv/movie but the content so far isn't that great on there. I think it will improve to compete with Netflix Streaming, which I love. Watching the Cosby Show with my kids and Thirtysomething. THere are lots of free "private channels" for the Roku like HGTV and Food Network and Fox News. Got a digital antenna for local stuff and cancelled cable, love it!

Also, my fave channels on there (for free) are Pandora (internet music channel, can make your own based on what you like), Nowheremanchannel (lots of old shows, classic movies, news from all over the country). When we ditched cable and got the antenna and Roku, we discovered free tv like MeTv and AntennaTV, which are full of old classic shows. Any new things we don't get (like Real Housewives of NJ) we can buy thru Amazon Instant Video for 1.99/show and we're good to go.

Oh, I just got my Roku LT today. I got it off of amazon.com for $44.99. So, far, I am loving it. I haven't signed up for my free Netflix, etc... trials yet because I want to explore the box a little before I potentially pay for anything. But, the free channels are awesome! One of the first things I watched an episode of "As The World Turns" from 1961 from the Internet Archive channel. Amazing, Emily Stewart hasn't been born yet and a custody battle over her father is just beginning. It's history programming - LOL. I also watched episodes of "I Married Joan", "227", "Spiderman" and "Casper". I absolutely love classic tv shows and movies and several channels are chock full of them. Right now, i'm watching an episode of "News Radio" on Crackle. Crackle also has a ton of free modern movies. There is just so much that I can't decide which to watch first - LOL. So far, i'd say my favorite channels are: Crackle Cnet Pub-D-Hub NBC News Nowhere TV Funny or Die Not a lot of favorites now. But, i've only had the box for about 10 hours - LOL

We got our Roku over the weekend. I love it! We already have Netflix and will be getting Hulu Plus as soon as the cable is gone. Our cable is prepaid (month ahead) so I cancelled it as of the next billing cycle. The one channel I think I will miss the most and haven't found anyplace to watch the shows is Food Network. Any ideas where I can watch them?

We have a Sony DVD player that streams Netflix, Amazon Video, Pandora, etc. We can also stream Netflix thru our Wii and Xbox, but the Roku is my favorite by far. It's just so easy. So much easier to work than any of the other units. I love my Roku!

OMFG I love my Roku LT. I use it mainly for Netflix and Pandora and the rest of the family loves the old tv shows on the free channels.

Our family doesn't have cable. My SO constantly reminds me to call the cable company about it, but I'm like we don't need another bill. We mainly watch DVDs from our collection and occasionally rent new DVDs from the library or Blockbuster/Redbox. I would have to research more info on this product. It sounds great. Hopefully it's worth the money. ![]() Thankful that I stumbled upon AFC and even more thankful for it's users. |

Those of you who don't have cable, how do you get locals? We have been researching antennas. Some places say we need a roof top, some say just a set top would be fine. Any stories/suggestions to share?
