They are brownish colored beans, you can buy them dry or canned. I buy mine dry and boil them..I usually add whatever "scrap" meat is on sale the cheapest....usually winds up being neckbones, sometimes salt pork or whatever.....I, personally, do not think the type of meat matters...it all flavors them just right. I make up a pan of cornbread and VOILA! dinner is served. BTW....you can buy a pound of pintos for around .60 cents. This is a very affordable meal that will feed a whole lot of people.

Yummy! I love pinto beans and cornbread! Of course I was born and raised in Arkansas. My favorite is buttermilk cornbread with cracklins!

I haven't had them together, and can't honestly say I LOVE pinto beans any more than any other beans (which are "fine", but not "love"). I do love good cornbread though!

Cracklins are like little tiny pork skins only they are hard and crunchy. Oh they taste so good in cornbread!

My grandmother would make this meal for my family when we came to visit during the holidays. She also served it with macaroni and cheese casserole. It was a tradition. Mmmm...

Cracklins are more along the lines of the stuff in the bottom of the pan when you make a lot of bacon...Good cornbread contains bacon grease and all good Southern girls have a container of bacon grease in the fridge! :shhh

They are in the same family as a pork rind, they are smaller and really hard. It would hurt your teeth to eat them out of the package unlike a pork rind. Cracklins are harder and have more fat. When they are cooked in the cornbread they soften up. All this talk about beans and cornbread make me want to go home and have mom cook me some!

The only way to make pintos and cornbread any better is to add new taters fried in cornmeal and "poke" greens!! Cant wait till the "poke" comes up!!

well now that we are talking about pinto beans and cornbread.
I'll add another
turnip greens and cornbread with homemade spicy vinegar.
only problem is,nobody else likes these but me.I have to resort to going to a relatives to get these.
about a dozen years ago cracker barrell actually had good beans and great turnip greens, but since then I think have started using canned versions

I grew up eating pinto bean's and cornbread a lot, and still love it. We were so poor and there was usually a lot to feed. Real cheap meal and so so good. I still make them. I sometimes, add sausage or ground beef and chopped up potatoes in the bean's.

you want to know something else that is really good and cheap that we used to eat Pork and beans with hamburger in it. It may not sound very good but you would be surprised and its pretty cheap too. Cyra just reminded me of that when she mentioned putting ground beef in her Pinto beans

I love pork n beans with ground beef added, my DH makes those on the grill and they are soooo good! DD likes them with sliced hot dogs in there.

Another thing if you add ground beef to your pinto beans put in a can or two of Rotel umm umm good!

OK, Now I am going to confess that at one time, we were so poor, we only put a spoon of shortening in our beans to help thicken them up...no scrap meat to put in them.
