i didn't really want to start a whole new post, but didn't know where else to put this and wanted to share.

if any of you have a lowes home improvement, they have an earth day sale this weekend for tomato & pepper plants at .50 each!

i took the ad to my local walmart & they pricematched for me. picked up 3 tomato & 2 pepper plants for 2.50. can't beat that!!

to be honest, while the plants themselves looked ok, the peat pots they were in were a bit moldy (white spots?). i took off all the peat pot & some of the dirt and replaced it with miracle grow organic potting mix & repotted.

hopefully, that wasn't a big red flag, but for .50 each (& i used overage from a coupon to get me them free! ) i figured i'd give it a shot, lowes is too far of a drive for me to check out what they had & i got heirloom tomatos at walmart.

time will tell, i've never had much luck gardening, but this year i'm a bit more prepared...i think

$.50 is an AWESOME price, but yeah I've seen the same plants for sale at Home Depot and Menards for very cheap (less than $4). However, same as newclipper, the white fungus on them (some had YELLOW fungus too!) really put me off of purchasing them. From everything I've read, the mold really isn't all that bad unless of course it is actually attacking your plant, but I still wouldn't be able to bring the plants in my house to transplant anyways because my husband is allergic to the mold growing on it. I haven't checked out Walmart's selection yet either, but I have plants I started from seeds, so I may just stick with those unless I do actually get an outdoor raised garden planter made, then I just might purchase an older plant or two for outdoors.

Generally the white mold on the soil isn't a big problem. It just means that the plants have been standing too close with poor ventilation. It will clear up once you get the plant home and they are not crammed together on those trays.

Yeah, having the fan on my plants has been great, I've not gotten any of the white fungus on them. I've also tried to water them from the bottom, but I absolutely hate the soil-less peat mix...I think maybe next time I'll mix a little potting soil in it, the stuff hardly retains water at all, I don't care what anyone says. The peat pots suck as well!
