Ahoy mateys. I be encountering a wee bit o' a problem that is new to one such as I. Of late, I be gatherin' the booty from the recyclin' sheds near me cabin. Nary a problem in the past, ceptin' a red-faced moment fer yours truly when another Cap'n came to leave some swag behind & some pretense was made again, by yours truly, of havin' some other purpose than mere plunderin'.



But I be digressin'.

Anyways, here was I safe in me cabin, sortin' out me booty after one of my foragin's, gettin' it all shipshape as ye know we pirates are wont, when lo & behold to me surprised eyes, I see some other scurvy knave be cuttin' wee snips hither & thither thru every one of the barcodes in the Letters of Marque we all rely on. Best fer yours truly, it was only in some of me swag. Clearly a blaggard wieldin' 'is cutlass so as to destroy me hopes of gatherin' up some gold coins an' permittin' no quarter for any Bretheren of the Coast.

So's me buckos, what's a Cap'n to do? Have any of ye ever encountered such a scurvy dog in yer piratin'? Do ye think this be another Jack Tar whose business I'm hornin' in on? Or do ye think this be just some addlepate who means me no disrespect and is ignorant of piratin' ways and codes of honor?

'Tis a shame I be given' away me cat o'nine tails of late on freecycle. Walkin' the plank is too kind. A pox on this blaggard! Argh!

But really, anyone have any thoughts on this?

Am I horning in on someone else's scavenging?

Why else cut through the barcodes? (And this is the first time the barcodes were ever cut that I've noticed.)

How would someone know what I'm doing in the sheds (no, not that! ) if they weren't doing the same thing & noticing a dearth of coupons?

Or is this just some poor, bored person desperately in need of a couponing hobby of her/his very own?

I really want to know why!

All the inserts were cut or just a few of the inserts cut?

Well, I pull the inserts from a variety of newspaper piles dropped off by individuals. Up until this past week never noticed anything unusual. Some of them will have some coupons cut out, but are still usable & I take those as well.

But as I was going through my recent pile of collected inserts, I noticed several of them (about 3 or 4 inserts were affected) had cuts halfway through the bar code; some at angles, some straight through. It was like the snip the tip of your scissors makes, maybe 1/2" long or less. Most of the coupons are still usable because the bar codes weren't destroyed or the coupon wasn't cut all the way through. But it was weird. And it was every single coupon that was left (not already cut out) in these inserts--even order forms for ornaments or Franklin Mint & stuff like that. Every single one.

Which made me wonder, why would someone do that if not to render the coupon unusable? Now it's possible it's their "system" so they know what coupons they don't want. But some of these coupons took some ingenuity and some effort to cut into & I don't really think it's a system. Which leads me to conclude that someone else gathers coupon inserts from the recycling sheds, has noticed that they are no longer there & has decided to make it difficult for the person taking them (namely, me) to use any of their leftover inserts either. But I'm a tad paranoid, so I'd love to hear what the rest of you think.

I have a strange theory....could this slasher be a person who delivers or sells newspapers and has to destroy remaining coup inserts, but takes his/her own first? I know they are in a recycling bin within a development, but you never know who dumps their trash there...maybe they like to recycle and discovered your communal bins. The reason I pose this theory is because I did self checkout at Acme the other day and someone left their catalinas laying there. The front end mgr. asked me if they were mine because otherwise he'd have to take them and trash them (of course I took them). I figured that since they have to destroy catalinas in a supermarket, maybe inserts have to be destroyed as well. just an idea....

Update: seems to have been some weird anomaly. Haven't seen it again. Recently, that is.

And woozle2000, that's a good idea, but then why not just rip up the entire insert? Or cut it into 1/4s at the angle or something. I mean, this person like worked to cut some of the barcodes that were near the inside seam of the double-paged inserts but left the pages otherwise intact. It was just weird.



It takes all kinds. I guess someone was nipping at the sherry as well as their inserts. Or jus' keepin' the mind active. Or working on those fine motor skills.
