CVS in court again for selling expired items

CVS in court (again) for (even more) expired drugs, milk, eggs, and formula -- DailyFinance

I don't shop CVS very often but I found this interesting. Anyone had any experience buying expired items from CVS?

I'm a little in aw that CA doesn't outlaw selling expired drugs...

I am in Connecticut and the only thing I have ever found that were maybe expired were the Soyjoy bars. I don't understand why they don't do a better job of taking expireds off the shelves when they were given a chance to improve?! However I have never had a bad experience shopping at the CVS stores around here. The service is always great.

From what I read it's because it costs more in time and manpower to get them to go through the items that it would be had someone found out and they were sued. This happens alot actually especially when it comes to things like mining and logging. They allow the waste to go into the stream because it would cost them MORE money to be eco friendly than it would if they had to pay a fine.

Could this be the reason why CVS sales and ECBs have been lackluster lately? They have to pay so much in fines, they can't afford to pass the great savings, that they used to, on to the consumer anymore?

Well, I'm sure it happens. Around here it happens with Walgreens - which is crazy since its a newer store. I've never seen anything expired at our CVS and have always had a great experience there. It may have something to do with management.

I have had problems buying expired items at my CVS. Potato chips, vitamins, OTC paid meds, etc. Now I check everything I buy there. At one CVS in my area, the cashier checked the items I purchased to make sure they were not expired.

I don't understand how it could cost so much to look at the dates. When you stock you should rotate the stock - meaning put the older items in front and the new in the back. When somebody stocks, would they not be looking at the dates then? I guess the cost comes in that they would lose money throwing the stuff away versus selling it to an unsuspecting consumer.

They either have a problem rotating stock or having too much stock to begin with. It seems that going thru each store and getting rid of all the expireds and then ordering accordingly would solve the problem. But what do I know?

Well i never noticed it til the CA thing came out...but one day they had some snack packs marked down at the front and I was going to grab them and they were expired. As far as their groceries go for the most part they're too expensive for the amount they have in stock....

I won't buy milk from there anymore. Even if the date is current, it always sours way too fast. Don't know why, but this definitely opens my eyes.

I agre with the above poster. Rotating stock is part of the stocking process. How could it take any longer to check the dates as you put up the new items? Seems to me way too many companies blame poor service on "the economy".

Some items have "codes". I remember having to go through these candy bars once that weren't selling and it was all in code. It took me about an hour and a half for about 40 bars.. It was a little ridiculous. However, most of them were expired so it was time well spent in my opinion.

i never noticed either but I do know my local Food Lion is just plain gross about expired food on their shelves especially if the items are on the bottom shelf.

I bought some beef stew that had expired ONE YEAR earlier!

i noticed with the cereal even though it says it's good it doesn't taste the same...crazy I know...and as far as those codes. those are so annoying when you have them in your pantry....I don't stockpile that much yet...don't know what I'll do when I get to that point of having to figure out a code...

As a pharmacy tech who started in retail, we were always told "rotate stock...rotate stock..". Yeah, I'm pretty anal too about checking dates. The drug stores around here are usually good, but the grocery stores...ugh! They always look at me like I'm nuts when I point something out...but I'm like I'm not going to buy this.

About a year ago they had free w/ extra bucks cheese crackers their own brand and I found boxes that were outdated by one year! Target in our town is horrible w/ outdated food items-I always find outdated can goods/salad dressing/Pace salsa, ect. Always take it to the store manager-Hummm maybe that's why I have issues at that Target?????

I went into several stores last year to get formula for my niece (Similac Soy ready made), and I found several containers in 2 different stores that were expired by days or weeks. Not good.
My Soy Joy bars were also expired. Now, does anyone know, who is actually responsible for clearing out expired items? Is it the store or does the company who makes the product send someone around?

my mother in law ONLY uses CVS (why, I don't understand but she's 70+ and my MIL so I choose my battles)... she is ALWAYS coming home with expired stuff from there... My kids joke, she LOOKS for the out dates so she has something to complain about...
