What Items are you comfortable using after the expiration date?

I'm wondering what items anyone on here feels comfortable using past the expiration date.

I'll start, even though there's no need to because of my stockpile I feel comfortable using Toothpaste after it's expiration date. I don't think a month after the date imprinted would really make any big difference.

I don't mind using tampons past the expiration date. Can cotton and plastic/cardboard really go bad???

Anything liquid I get leary using, but I would think that toothpaste is fine a few months after the expiration.

Oh, and I also think that uncooked pasta is fine as well.

I agree with the tampons / pads. I don't think I ever realized that there was an expiration date. I'll have to look when I get home!

Hmm, most things don't bug me. Might be better to list the things that do bother me when they reach expiration date:

dairy products (got a mouthful of sour milk once...now I am vigilant)
meats
face products (the only cosmetics I ever use)

That's about it. Everything else, I use without even consulting the date.

I don't use much refrigerated food after the expiration date. My dad doesn't like to throw away a container of miracle whip until it is empty. Sometimes I will go home and want some but it expired a few months ago. If it's not long, like 1 month maybe it's ok but a little lumpy, otherwise I toss it out for him.

I use almost everything after expiration - dairy is one exception except for one thing - Cheese - I freeze that and am currently about 3 months past, but it's only thawed for a week or so before it's gone...we got a great deal and i got a bunch - just don't serve it in original packaging with guests who don't know it's been frozen for awhile.

Other things I'll use past expiration --

medication - pills format...I have ibuprofen that's about 1.5 years past and it's working fine. Not liquid stuff though, pretty vigilant on that.

Frozen items - see cheese above.

Canned goods - check the cans for rust and warping though. Any damage and it's gone. tomato products only about 1 yr past again based on cans and opening quality.

Cereals and such - but only a little past cuz they do go stale...generally they aren't around after - so to find one is a bit of a shock.

Toothpaste (just had a friend use some she got a great deal on 3 or 4 years ago), shampoo, soap, laundry soap, vinegar (I use it in laundry), bleach (though don't store for more than a year), soda

I mean really almost anything. But I always check for quality, if I open something and it's questionable - it's gone. I've researched the medication issue from several angles and I'm okay with it though I know some would argue...I freeze foods that I can that might go bad - flour, cheese, cornstarch, yeast, meat...

Most of what you read on expiration is pretty conservative. and there are ways to lengthen the life...if it's close and I don't know - I'll donate before that time or pitch it if I think it's bad, but I can't think of much I don't go past an expiration date on now and again.

Can you tell me more about using the vinegar in laundry. Does it have to be a certain kind and how does it help? Thanks! I've read about it a while ago and forgot all about it.

I'm like the above and use about everything except dairy and meat(if fresh, I freeze and eat it much later). I judge on how it looks, smells, etc rather than just the best buy date. Most dates are just that- the product is best if used by that date but not bad if not.

Ashley.....I'm with you!! Once I notice the expiration date, I just can't do it!! My boyfriend freaks out, I used to get milk from WIC and sometimes we wouldn't use it because it had to be whole milk and I would pour out the whole gallon. He would always lecture me about how it's still good and I'm weird. Oh well....better safe than sorry. I just can't make myself eat it once I see the expiration. Like mayo......I went to use some for deviled eggs and it was 5 months past and I tried to MAKE myself use it and ended up running to the store to buy more.

I pretty much use anything after the expiry date, provided that it hasn't expired more than a year ago. Milk and other dairy I'll usually use about a week or two after the sell by date. If anything is questionable, I toss it - there's no use getting sick over expired stuff you only paid nickels and dimes for......I'm a microbiologist, so I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food. If I have some bagels and there is a small moldy spot, I'll cut the moldy spot off and eat it - if there is a lot of mold, I toss them. The important thing about foods is to refrigerate them after opening. Microbial growth is immensely slowed down when in the refrigerator, so be sure to follow the mfr instructions and REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING!

Sorry to hijack but what about green olives? I left an open jar out yesterday & it still smell the same. I am :assuming: since they are pickled they should be fine.?.?.?.?.?

The only dairy I'll use past the date is yogurt - and only within a few weeks of expiring. I'll use eggs up to a month -- only if I'm cooking them thoroughly and they look and smell okay when I crack them open. I freeze cheese if there's any doubt I won't use before it expires and it always tastes fresh after thawing.

I think cream cheese if unopened and in the foil wrapper should be good a little past the expiration date too.

I'll use pretty much everything for a couple months after the exp. date, except for meat and dairy products. However, we have never had any dairy products make it to the exp. date we drink them up fast. I have used meat that was frozen for 2 years - as long as it is wrapped properly, it will not get freezer burn. And I will cut the mold off of hard cheeses, like cheddar, and eat the good part.

I'll use almost anything past the expiration date-However, I won't use pancake mix because of documented issues with mold. Mold in Pancake Mix Warning

Hi all...
Just thought I would weigh in....
the packaging dates are 'sell by' dates, NOT expiration dates. Actually, most milk, dairy products are good for about 2 weeks past the 'sell by date'. Sell by dates are coded for retailers to rotate stock. Canned goods will be just fine long past the sell by date! They were packed at their peak freshness. Dry goods, such as pasta, coffee will also be fine. Of course, if something smells or looks funny you should not use it!
