I'm itching!!!! YUCK!!! That word makes my skin crawl. It can be common if there's that many kids in the school who's parent don't make their kids bathe on a normal basis. One thing I know...lice hate cleanliness, and they also hate hair chemicals. Make sure your child(ren) bathe and wash/cream rinse their hair every night. Also use a detangler in the a.m., and a little dab of hairspray. That should keep them away from your kiddos! HTH

Use some of those free styling agents! Mouse ~ gel ~ hairspray ~ buggies HATE it! When I was interning I found "something" under my fingernail ~ I went to the nurses office immediately! She checked me and said I was not a "friendly environment" for them. She said IF it was one, it was very "mature" and nothing would stay in my hair any longer than it had to didn't hurt my feelings none! They actually like clean hair ~ greasy and styled-up hair they don't like so find hairstyles for the kids that use lots of gel and mouse and spray!~ and I don't think that there were necessarily 5 cases in your child's room of 20 ~ the kids have lunch and recess together so 1 case in 120 kids may result (actually SHOULD result) in a note home to all! |

mab! don't buy "chemicals" just in case... all you need are 4 things: MAYONAISE PLASTIC WRAP APPLE CIDER VINEGAR! FINE TOOTH COMB if you find even one (usually at the nape of the neck or near the ears), immediately pour apple cider vinegar saturate through the hair. (this burns them and causes them to grow up faster). Then cover childs hair in Mayo---LOTS OF IT!! (this smothers them)... wrap all of the hair and cover nape / ears in plastic wrap. wait 30 minutes, then pull off wrap and rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar again. then get out the comb and go through each section of hair carefully. the lice are dead, just need to be picked out...strand by strand. And, yes, lice are attracted to CLEAN HAIR!!! and especially love tow-head children (blondes).

Getting lice has nothing to do with hygiene. You can bathe your kids twice a day and they can still get it!

So you got a note sent home ? I was told by my son's teacher , on the shhh between us, the school doesn't notify other parents anymore. the school nurse flicks them off, sends the kid back to class. the kid isn't even sent home !! we were like WTH ??thats NOT right. I've been trying to find the policy on head lice and letting other parents know. I can't it. On the school district website, nothing is working, none of the links.

Our county used to have a "NO NIT policy" ~ if there was a nit (egg) they went home! Now we have changed it to a "No Live" policy. The theory is that if they haven't hatched then they can't transfer to others and getting an education is top priority. Problem is, they can hatch at any moment and then transfer! And mayo doesn't work ~ just makes the hair very conditioned! |

mayo always worked for me, it took my sister AGES to pick them all out because I have thick hair - then i discovered this thing called a ROBI-COMB, I am totally against using chemicals unless need to - so this is great - it zaps them and then you comb out the nits - and if you keep using it will break the cycle and you wont have them anymore. everyone gets lice - i only got it one time when we lived in ny (14 years) and then when i was in school here (fl) i got it like 4 times

Mayo never worked for my kids and lice do like clean hair. Our school had a no nit policy and my daughter's hair hung to her bottom....it was very frustrating every time there was an outbreak. I never, ever found anyhting that would help loosen those dang nits!!!! We spent many a night with ouchies and complaining and metal combs. Then, when I started working for Head Start, my office partner told me she kept tons of gel on her kids' hair.....I started gelling and moosing the kids up and we had less outbreaks......I definately agree with M.J. on that!

I was just coming to post about checking for lice, and saw there was already a thread started. My youngest DD5 came home yesterday with lice. When the older two got home I checked them, and middle DD10 has them also. My DS13 and I do not have them, but, still did the combing and shampooing. Taking a bath every night and washing your hair every night does not prevent getting them. Please don't think that the 'dirty' kids in school have them, and that's where your darling little one got them from. Not trying to be sarcastic, but come on, knowledge is power, and we can all educate ourselves on this. Everyone is going to 'hear' different ways to get them, prevent them, get rid of them. What works for some, may not work for all. This is something that you shouldn't be ashamed of, embarrasses by, it happens, and it doesn't make you dirty. Tho you may feel that way. It might gross you out, they are kinda gross. But, it's something that goes along with having kids, and we as the parents have to deal with it. No it's not fun sitting for 3 hours combing one kids hair, then doing the shampoo, or home remedy. Nor the house cleaning, and laundry that comes next. Washing everything, bagging toys for 7-10 days, stripping beds every morning, bath every morning and another 3 hours of combing. It's not fun, it's a lot of work. Lynda |

Two of my grandkids got lice a couple of year ago. My daughter used the Rid stuff...didn't work...used another kind didn't work. Used Mayonaisse...worked...but still had a hard time getting the dead nits out. She used olive oil and that worked. Now both girls go to school with mousse and hairspray...they don't wash their hair as often. It took forever to get rid of them...she washed everything...threw away stuffed toys... put everything in the dryer. It was terrible... As to lice liking blondes I think that is partially true...my blonder granddaughter got them first and then the dark headed girl got them. Hang in there guys...kids grow up and unfortunately this sometimes is a part of it. My head still itches thinking about the itchy little buggers though.

My son is in kindergarden and they sent a note home last week. SOmeone in his class had them. My head was itching thinking about it. I told him to put his coat in his book abd at school becasue they hang coats together, I told him to not use anyones bruch comb etc. Besides that there is nothign I know to do to prevent. A friend told me to use sauve shamppo coconut to help prevent it. ANyone else ever hear this? I remeber having lice when I was little. Someone told me there is no shame in getting them just shame in not getting rid of them.

I haven't heard of the sauve shampoo, but I bet there are a lot of home remedies. Here is my set up: rubbing alcohol cup plate tooth brush toothpicks paper towels ziploc bags pony tail holders towel spray bottle of water regular small tooth comb shower caps (disposable) generic lice shampoo mayo (in the fridge not in the tote) I now keep all of this on hand in a small tote in the bathroom. So if I ever need it, it's all together and in one spot. Lynda |

wow, great comments. I still think it all starts off in a dirty head and if you shower your child(ren) daily yes they can get it but they won't stay long. I'm glad I've never had to deal with this! I sure hope I never have to. Goodness my stomach is hurting now

We had a problem a few years ago when a classmate of my dd kept reinfecting the class. I tried all the home remedies....mayo, tea tree oil, ect. Nothing worked except the poisonous kits from the store. They were horrible on her hair and you never want to put a pesticide on your child but, that's all I could do. Since then, I have learned to keep her hair put up in a pony tail. I still always find myself checking but, we have avoided it since. Also, we brought in a sealable tub to keep her coat, hat, snowpants. ect in. With the kids hanging their stuff up next to each other, of coarse it was gonna keep passing around.
