I hang mine from hooks or nails on the patio overhang. I don't have problems with ants. Probably the best thing to try would be to sprinkle ant killer around the ground at the base of the shepards hook, this would definitely discourage them. As for not having hummingbirds, they're pretty much just now starting to come back and I'm not sure about your area, are you talking about your home or your beach place? Here where I am at, they begin migrating back around the first of April and we get to see them for about a month. Then about the first week in May, the seem to disappear. What is really happening is that the females are going to build their nest. They don't want to build to close to a feeder where males are going to be and they don't want to get too far from their nest once the eggs are laid so they live off of insects and any wild flowering plants nearby. Males move on also. Then, (about now they are starting to come back around here) you will begin to see them reappear after the eggs have hatched and the babies leave the nest. This is why the last part of the summer you will see more hummingbirds then when they first migrated back. I am willing to bet you will see more pretty soon. Here's a pic of one that I took in the past week or so when they first started coming back. He's in motion next to the feeder. Hummingbird Blog |
