| OMG I'm so excited!!
DH and I have been discussing getting a freezer for some time now and when he opened our jam packed freezer today, he is like this is getting ridiculous! So we went shopping! I had just wanted a small chest freezer, but when we got to sears, he started looking at the uprights saying that maybe he could actually find something in the freezer if we went that way. He ended up picking out a bigger one than I originally wanted with the comment that I could make the thing pay for itself in less than 6 months anyway the way I shop. Its ordered and he's picking it up for me on Weds and I already have a shopping list together for Thurs to start filling it!! Its going to be so nice to finally not have to limit myself on good deals on meat and other frozen deals due to space and pray that another good deal will come along before I run out of some of the staple items! I just had to share with those that understand!!! |

That's awesome!! I am so happy for you. I had a small chest for about 8 years, and around christmas my dh came home with a HUGE upright whirlpool freezer. It is awesome, I love it so much! You will love yours too. I mean chest freezers are great, but I always ended up with stuff on the bottem that I could never get to. This way everything is easy to get to and organized.

when we started looking for freezers - dh wanted a chest freezer. i, on the other hand, needed an upright as i'm vertically challenged and still remember hanging over the edge of my gm's and getting stuck half in/half out! ![]() congrats on the new freezer!

I absolutely get it! I got a new, medium sized upright a couple months ago and LOVE it! My one complaint is I wasn't able to talk DH into agreeing to get the bigger one! Congrats! You'll be surprised how fast you fill it up!

I'd love love love a freezer. I'm tired of cramming everything in my side-by-side (which I hate by the way, but it came with the house.) Did you get a self-defrosting one? I heard those reduce your "shelf" life of the food. When our time comes to get one I'll have to do my research. Congrats on your purchase.

Congrats. me and DH are thinking about getting one as well. I'm wondering and don't know if anyone here knows how much electric they use?? Is one better than the other as far as the electric goes (upright or chest)?? I just don't want my Electric bill to go up so much every month - and this isn't something I can just turn off. thanks

On the other post about the shelf life of items in a frost free freezer - haven't really noticed any difference. Other than I don't have to chisel stuff out every couple of months to defrost the thing which will shorten the life of food since you have to take it all out to defrost the freezer. |

I think choice of upright vs chest has a lot to do with how you plan on using it and what kind of person you are. DH is very visual and if it dont reach out an bite him, he is not going to find it(this goes for all of our storage stuff) We agreed that if we were strictly going to use it for meat, then a chest would be the way to go, but since that wasnt the goal he weighed in for the upright. And no, it is not a self defroster. We are a small enough family where I can let supplies dwindle enough to put everything in the main freezer in order to defrost without too much of a problem and some good planning. For me, I started a list of whats in it and how much I saved by getting it 'cheap' I want to figure out just how long its taking me to pay for the investment. (it also will save me a trip down to the basement to see just what I have) I also made up an inventory of just how I want to fill it, always leaving a shelf free for that unexpected GREAT deal. I do the same with my pantry and my toiletries(well sorta, for toiletries, I have one 2x2 shelf. I keep that full and the rest goes to charity) So far, I've spent very little and filled 2 of the 5 shelves in it and haven't even started in on the door storage yet. Its so tempting to take advantage of the good deals, but I'm trying to keep this to VERY good deals or better. I know you all know what I mean! Thanks to all for all I've learned here and for being there to share what others just wouldnt understand |

An update...its almost full!!! Lots of free stuff and some really good deals on meat. I think we've already paid for it. On a side note, my DD found it to be a great way to 'hide' the snacks she really likes. She always makes sure to put her favorite things behind other stuff so DH doesnt gobble them up.(I make sure to keep some of the stuff in the upstairs freezer so he doesnt miss out either) Both have a real sweet tooth and somethings I just can NEVER have enough of. |
