Would you want this for a wedding gift?

DH and I were invited to a wedding next month. Well I happened to check their Target registry to see if there was a fun gift we could buy...

I am completely and utterly baffled...why did they register for things like batteries? printer paper? ink cartridges? lightbulbs?

oh and what on earth are they going to do with seven sets of bedsheets???

I think we are just going to get a card w/some cash. now please don't get me wrong, I really do appreciate practical gifts...but this is their wedding!

Do they live together already? If so, they might have a good bit of stuff already. Me and DH were like that. We chose just to upgrade and replace stuff like dishes, but didn't need bedding and other more traditional wedding items.

My DD took ballet class and one of the other mothers changed all of her sheets EVERY day- hers, kiddos and guest bedroom. This is a woman that also worked full time on top of all the sheet changing/washing.

I think these days a lot of couples already have tons of stuff before their wedding so they're shopping for more "practical" things

put together a everyday basket for them - tylenol, aspirin, band-aids you get the idea - things that would save them time shopping

I WISH my family had bought us practical stuff. We were dirt poor when we got married and could barely afford food. Instead of giving us the practical gifts we request we received dish sets, silverware sets, pots and pans, dust collectors (I mean lovely serving items), table linens and things like that. We were two college kids who already had a home established, we were (and still are) not the fancy type so the fancy dishes are still in the boxes 5 years later . Practical things would have been wonderful.

Wow, seven sets of bedsheets! We asked for camping gear on our registry. I guess that's not as weird as ink and paper.

I'm sorry but I think registering for stuff like this is ridiculous and tacky. I'm from the old school, I guess, where people register for things needed to establish a kitchen, etc.

I'm not sure why it would be tacky to register for some things but not others.

I agree. Tacky to me is buying things for people that they don't want and won't use. Because then you put them in a situation of having to hold on to these things in order to keep from offending you. I've had a huge wooden salad bowl in the garage for five years now. I did not ask for it. It's not me and anyone who took five minutes to get to know me know I'm not a fancy person and I don't do "presentation". I cook it and he eats it...and we break more dishes than anyone I know .

LOL me either. Our sheets don't get changed until one of us notices a funk that is usually produced by the baby that sleeps in our bed. I do have a friend who irons her towels and then puts them away according to color....so some lovely people are just a bit off.

I went to a wedding once where they registered for outdoor stuff - rakes, hoses, solar walkway lights ... like seriously, why not just ask for a home depot gift card and be done with it.

Though it is better than the people who register for the $25 a towel bath towels, or the $400 bedding sets, even though you know full well they would just return the stuff - you know, people who don't have ANYTHING that fancy in their current homes suddenly wanting everything from the Macy's houseware catalog ... yeah ... that actually makes me mad ...

Whereas, people asking for DVD's and batteries just kind of makes me smile. I usually do a gift basket of wine and movie rental gift certificate or something like that if they ask for mostly goofy non-traditional wedding gift stuff. I won't gift wrap a rake for a wedding gift. :P

yes, I admit, I am pretty traditional when it comes to this kind of stuff.

they don't live together, they are just starting out, in fact. both are moving out of their parent's houses into their own home (groom *just* bought a house). their registry is full of other stuff, like crock pots (yes, multiple - 3 crock pots, each a different brand and different color ), kitchen gadgets, towels, fourteen packages of pillowcases, etc.

Now I understand that ppl register for 'non-traditional' stuff like garage shelving, camping gear, dvd's etc. and if you really want/enjoy those things, I'm happy to buy that for you. these were just run-of-the-mill household items, though and it struck me as really odd...I mean, like registering for a bottle of Windex or jar of peanut butter, ya know? Yes, you are going to need it. just doesn't seem very wedding present-y to me I guess.

As far as the multiple, maybe they just went nuts with the handheld scanner. I know when I did mine I went back and edited online because I had multiples.

At least they did not register for sexy stuff like KY or lingerie. Depending on the person, this can make me very uncomfortable. With a friend or coworker, no biggie. With my brother-in-law's fiancee, it was definitely a NO GO. I do not wanna picture my BIL doing sexy times with anybody...or her for that matter.
