Chef Weird Food Names

Do you have any weird food names? When I grew up my parents got tired of us asking whats for supper so they would make up names. What made me think of this is when I was fixing myself a ham sandwich I was putting brown mustard on it and my daughter walked by and told her friend that i was putting baby poopy on my sandwich. Well she obviously has been around my mother toooooo long. We would have "Sh*t on the Shingles" which is toast with hamburger gravy. Or "Garbage" which is a Fried potato, ham, and mushroom soup mixture. I'm sure we had other unusual names but I cant remember them at the moment.

Do you have a warped family that names their food unusual names?

beef-a-roni

My mom would make what everyone else calls Beef-A-Roni, but we would call it American Chop Suey. Not crazy weird, but I've always wondered where the name came from... and why I've never heard nayone else call it that.

My Dad always tells us we're having Elephant toenails when someone asks what he's making or what's for dinner.

My parents would always respond when asked what was for dinner:

Sh*t On A Shingle
or
Horse Sh*t Fried In Oil
or
Pig Sh*t on a Cabbage Leaf

Garbage Salad - That's when my Mom would take EVERYTHING that was about to go bad and mix it up with lettuce.

Our Halloween menu last year was strange:

Mummies (pigs in blankets)
Skeleton Bones (cheese sticks)
Octopus legs (french fries)
Eyeballs (grapes)

Heehee! This year we just might eat worms (spaghetti).

One of the things that I crave is sh*t on a shingle. I think I may try to make a vegetarian version of this....

We never had a clear definition of what Sh*t On A Shingle was, it sort of just meant "leave Mom alone, she's cooking and whatever it is - you WILL like it".

First, my mom made S.O.S., which was what she called it on a regular basis. She musta been doing something different from what your mom made. Blah! It was gross.

I'm a vegetarian, too. Boca & Morningstar soy crumbles save the day for me when I'm craving something "meaty" like Enchilada Casserole. Mmm!

I think the SOS must be a northern thing...never heard of it here in the south or in the upper midwest for that matter. The oddest thing my mom every called anything was "egg in a hole" which was an egg fried in to a peice of toast that the center had been cut out of with a glass. In one of the reading series a couple of years back there was a story about that and they said the egg wore a hat...go figure...

In regards to the midwest, who in the heck needs odd names when you have things like pfefferneuse and knoepfla?? Or even yet, lutefisk....Oh and Lynda, their "pigs in a blanket" are a tomato, hamburger/sausage mix wrapped in cabbage and baked....Plain weird to me when I grew up eating hotdogs wrapped in crescent rolls as those!

We had the egg toast thing in Rhode Island, but we called it toad in a hole. I grew up on pigs in a blanket too (the crescent roll hot dog kind).

If you really want some weird named food, go to the UK. Try some:
WELSH RAREBIT - Cheese on toast
SPOTTED DICK - A sponge cake pudding thingy with currants
BUBBLE AND SQUEAK - Fried potatoes and cabbage
COCK-A-LEEKIE SOUP -Scottish soup of chicken and leeks
BANGERS AND MASH - Sausages and mashed potato
