who here had gestational diabetes???

I just went to the drs and found out my level is 139, she said the cut off is 140, but other places she has worked, it's 130. she said that 80% of people who test above 130 have it and 90% of people who test above 140 have it. I have to now go take the 3 hour blood sugar test and get the results of that and HOPE if I have it, I can control it with diet, if not, I'll have to take insalin....something I'm not looking forward to. So, I wondered who here had it, and how they were able to control it, and when you ended up having the baby. Also, big baby???? LMK, I'm farily curious the averages of these things!

Thanks

I just wrote this huge post and my DS 15 months came over and deleted it - ugh!!! So quick - I had to take the 1 hour test and then 2, 3 hour tests because my numbers were high on the first one and then one of my numbers were high on the second one. They were fine on the 3rd time so I was ok. I HATED ALL THE TESTS!!! Since you didn't give any other details, I dn't know if you ate anything before your 1 hour test. I didn't have restrictions with that one and I had had breakfast a few hours before. with the 3 hour test I couldn't eat for 12 hours so it made a difference. If you ate something before the test, then i wouldn't be too worried yet. Take the 3 hour one and see how it goes first. I was allowed to drink a little water with the 3 hour one, so bring a bottle just in case. It's a good time to do coupon stuff (wish I had this hobby back then). It's a long test and they test you I think 4 times - so have fun!!! No, it's really not that bad, and hopefully someone on here can help with what you'd have to do, but I wouldn't worry so much about it. You were borderline so it's not like you were WAY over. I think that diet will be able to control it if you aren't too bad. I guess it will ultimately be up to your doctor. I used to go on baby center online and they have tons of info on all that stuff. So, you may want to check it out. There are tons of boards on there for people who are pregnant and you may meet some really great people. I am still friends with all the girls that I met online while we were all pregnant. We've moved to a private chat but still going strong over 2 years later! Good luck!

same here, I had it with both of my sons, was able to keep it under control with just diet, although that was hard b/c I thought that being preg was a license to eat WHATEVER you wanted. But hey I only gained 12 lbs with my first and 11 lbs with my 2nd, both babies were under 7 lbs....................

I think its pretty commen to fail the 1 hour test and have to take the 3 hour only to find out you are OK. Thats what happened to me last time. My sister did have it with one of hers but was able to control it with diet alone. They had her meet with a nutrionist and plan a diet.

I had it as well. The benefit of it, though, was that I learned some really good eating habits and only gained 14 lbs. I was heavy to begin with, though. BUT I breast fed and carried many of the eating habits over to post-partum and lost like 40 pre-pregnancy pounds! Crazy!

I was able to control it with diet. One thing that a friend of mine told me that really made a big difference is just before bed, drink 8oz. of skim milk. It gives your body something to do during the night. If there's nothing for it to do, then it starts to overcompensate and will really jack up your morning fasting number. Milk is a protein so it's metabolized much slower.

With my 2nd I failed the 1 hr test, but passed the 3 hr

With my 3rd and I ended up with gestational diabetes. I controlled it ok with diet, pricking myself 4 times a day.

I am such a food person - I love food, that was the worst part of it all was not getting to eat all I wanted to!

Many seem to have larger babies, but my dh was only 6 1/2 pounds 1 week early.

I had it with my twins and am hoping I don't get it again. The cutoff for my test was 130.

I had to control mine with diet and by testing my blood sugar 4 times a day. Then every night I had to call my numbers in to the diabetes center so they could monitor me. It made me miserable. The last thing I wanted was to be on a diet.

My babies were not big but then again, they were twins and born at 36 1/2 weeks so that probably had something to do with it.

Hopefully you will pass the 3 hr test!!!

I had it with my 1st. Controlled it with diet and checking my sugars 5 times a day. Passed the screening test with my second, but when he was born at 11 lbs, they figure it I had it just bad luck that it was not caught the 2nd time. If you have it, monitor your sugars, out control sugars helps to grow those large babies. Those large ones somtimes have a rough couple of days at first because they have a rough time making the transition from the high sugar womb.

I didn't eat anything before my test, I woke up that morning, didn't even drink any water, and went in to take my test about 1-2 hours after I woke up.
I'm VERY happy to hear that most of you were able to control it with diet, and am even MORE pleased to see the size of those babies.
Thanks for letting me know I'm gonna have sore fingers Hopefully I don't get it, but my dad has diabieties VERY bad, and his mom had it REALLY bad when she was alive, so I guess I'm not getting my hopes up.

I had gestational diabetes with DD. My one hour was over 170 and the three hour results were just as bad. My doc told me that I would probably end up needing insulin, but I was determined to follow a strict diet, so I did. I gained about 10 lbs and was 10 lbs lighter after I had the baby than when I first got pregnant! The diet is strict, but it is very healthy and I tried following it after I had DD, but the tempation of being able to eat whatever I wanted after so long was too strong! DD weighed 6#13 and had some initial low blood sugars. If you do have GD, please take care of it and follow the diet. The development of your baby can really be affected so you need to keep those sugars in control! Keep us updated and if you have any more questions, ask away!

With my first pregnancy @ 20 yrs of age I developed GD. I don't know if it went away after the delivery of my daughter. She was 20 1/2 inches long and 9lbs 6oz and healthy. I was just diagnosed as a diabetic March 2008. I am currently pregnant. With this pregnancy, When I began prenatal care my weight was 176 or 177. Having to follow a diet I went down to 170 lbs. Dr didn't like it and told me I had to eat more and not worry about my sugars because there are other methods to control it. Ok, so I began to eat more and now I'm 177 or 178. I'm currently taking 10mg Glyburide and hoping I don't have to go on insulin. (I'm afraid of needles,)

I was border line. I tested three times daily and controled it well via diet alone. LOTS, LOTS LOTS, of protein and veggies, almost no carbs and fruit. Honestly, I felt great eating that way, and wish I had what it takes to always eat that way, but I'm a mashed potato junkie.

At my worst my levels were in the high 180s and oddly my lowest reading was 42 (I've always been hypoglycemic)!

He was 21 inches and 9.4 but all my babies are bigger (9.8 - >) so that is not really anything unusual for me.

I had it with both DD and DS. Controlled with diet both times and it sucked. Being pregnant, on bedrest with both, and not being able to eat what I wanted, ugh. Add in the pregnancy hormones. Oooh, I was a lot of fun. I had to test my blood 5X a day. I got used to it.
DD was 5 weeks early at 7lbs 3oz, DS was 5 days early at 8lbs 12oz.
I have been told if you have gestational diabetes you have a 50% higher chance of getting diabetes later in life.... yeah, so there's that.
Good luck with the next test. The orange drink isn't as bad now that they've made it smaller. Just hold your nose and guzzle.

7 yrs. ago when I was pregnant with dd I was losing weight instead of gaining so they had me not eat or drink after midnite and then 45 minutes before appt. they had me drink this nasty orange stuff and then tested and my levels were to be at 120 or below. I don't remember what my #'s were but I had to give myself inulin shots 2x a day and test 4. I do remember at one of my appt. testing 96 and the dr. said that was the perfect level with insulin. Diabetes runs in our family so I think that is why I didn't have to chance to try and control by diet. I hate needles but didn't have problem giving myself the shots since the needs were smaller than the ones you use to test with. I ended up gaining 22lbs with a 9lb girl.
