Food How long are frozen foods good past their expiration or "best by" date?

I was just at Grocery Outlet and I bought the bertolli bagged meals for 0.99 each. The catch is that they have a "best by" date of June 08. I asked the employees and they said that they are allowed to sell it until 6 months past, but that the product is fine for a longer period since it is frozen. I went ahead and bought two for dinner tonight, but I would have loved to stock up at this great price! What do you guys and gals think? Are frozen foods safe past their use by /exp date and if so, for how long?

I would easily say 6months. Think about it, you freeze stuff all the time from the gardens and keept it that long or longer. I don't feel this would be any different. Meat says sell by date also but you put it in the freezer and can keep it much longer.

From the USDA site: Freezing and Food Safety

Is Frozen Food Safe?Food stored constantly at 0 °F will always be safe. Only the quality suffers with lengthy freezer storage. Freezing keeps food safe by slowing the movement of molecules, causing microbes to enter a dormant stage. Freezing preserves food for extended periods because it prevents the growth of microorganisms that cause both food spoilage and foodborne illness.

food expiration date

The expiration date that seems on packaged food is complicated to many people, largely as a result of phrases used, such as “Best Before,” “Sell By” or “Use By.” Is food still safe to eat on that date, or somewhat after that date? Let's consider saving money by understanding what that expiration date indicates.

It has to do with your freezer. If you have a self defrosting freezer it's not good for long term storage. I have a dedicated deep freezer in the garage and have rarely had anything become inedible.

If its in a deep freezer it will always be safe, it may become freezer burnt and loose it's taste after a few years but it will not make you sick. I have all kinds of meat I pull out 3-4 years old and it tastes no different than the new stuff. Expiration dates are requirements, they have to put them on there. I'll have stuff for example that expired a month ago (non freezer items) and it looks and smells and tastes fine so I eat it. I bought a loaf of bread that was moldy two days later and didn't expire for atleast another week.
