You may want to call the school directly for a list. I've done that with mine. Many schools also post their supply lists on the school's website. HTH, Stacey

| This won't help you . . .
I found my first graders supply list last night - get this - he has to take 36 - yes 36 sharpened pencils in - that is 1 pencil a week - what happened to taking 3 or 4 and then bringing more from home as you need them - it's like they don't want to teach them the responsibility of keeping track of their pencils - SHEESH - AND he has to take in 10 - yes 10 glue sticks - good think pencils and glue sticks are cheap - I just think it's ridiculous. I'm with whoever said to call the school or you could wait until your *orientation day* But if you are like me I like to have everything EARLY so I don't have to run out the night before. Good Luck! |

We needed markers, crayons, a white board a pencil bag, 1 dozen pencils....stuff liek that. We start Aug 20th & the list was sent out just this week. Every school & most likely every grade has different needs so I would check with your school before buying anyhting.

I'd say all of above, a mat or towel (our schools will not allow the mat) for naptime, Clorox wipes, change of clothes in a bag, blunt tip scissors. And you'll be ok! I've gone through it twice already and it's hard but you can do it!

I have noticed that over the years we are slowly buying items that the school used to provide, like the dry erase markers, red pens, sandwich bags, polaroid film, and hand sanitizer. It really makes the younger kids school supplies cost go way up. Also, when they are asking for 36 pencils at a time and all those glue sticks, you are sending them for other kids who don't bring any supplies. My daughters list specifally says NOT to put her name on any of it!! And when she gets to school, they will take her supplies and put them in the storage cabinet. Last year, her list required 6 large boxes of kleenex. My family of 4 only uses about 2 or 3 in a year. Not sure what the schools are doing with our tax money they get, but I don't think they are using it on things they should be.

I talked to my aunt today and she was telling me about the list for my cousin who starts kindergarten in a few weeks. He has to bring the 8 ounce bottles of hand sanitizer! That's a ton once you multiply it times the 20 kids in his class!

Walmart usually has the local school's supply lists in a display near the door closest school supplies!! My son is also starting K and has to have (2) 24 ct. crayons and (1) 8 ct. crayon, 16 glue sticks, 1 glue bottle,Washable markers,Water paint set, paint shirt, clipboard,3 blue dry erase markers,Kleenex,1 dozen pencils, gym shoes, and that's all I can think of without the list....Hope this helps!! Walmart has some really cheap deals on a lot of stuff and I price matched the other stuff.

All our stores are starting to put out the local lists... may want to check there... Also if you know of anyone who has a child slightly older than yours.. call them and ask what they had to bring.. It seems to be a wide array of needs.. One class I volunteer in has to have the following (there may be more.. this is just what I remember) ~Hand santizer ~ziplock baggies ~tissues ~dry erase markers ~sharpies ~pencils ~8 ct crayon - they are specific on the brand and it isnt crayola ~pink eraser ~glue sticks ~those markers for writing on the overhead projector films.. for the life of me I cant think of the name ~bookbag ~mat for naptime ~pencil box ~red pens The other class is somewhat different ~pencil box ~ziplock baggies ~tissues ~24 ct crayola ~8 ct markers ~white glue ~art smock thingie ~mat for napping ~bookbag ~pencils ~pink eraser ~index cards (they make flash cards out of these) ~folders (I think 3) That is all I can remember right now |

In defense of the teachers, they pay for these things out of their pocket when the kids don't bring them. Schools across the nation have cut teacher supplies to a bare minimum. We have been buying this week, 22 sets of glue and crayons, pencils, folders, etc. because some families in our district just can't supply those things for as many children as they have. This way the kids have new supplies and feel as good as the next child. I do this because I love the children in my room and know that they aren't at fault for bad choices their parents make or for things even out of their parents' control. I know that when supplies are taken up it seems that you are supplying for someone else's child, but I take up supplies because the children don't have a place to store them (but I mark everything except pencils). I understand where you are coming from with those thoughts, but please know that the teachers are using their own money for those children who can't supply these things. Okay...off my chest. :>)

I haven't received a list for my daughter yet, she starts kindergarten this year too. I remember from my son that he specifically needed the big, fat pencils (easier for them to hold) and the big, fat crayons too. Try to find them now, while the big sales are going. They never go as cheap as the other school items, so right now is the lowest you'll find them. I also grabbed some erasers, glue sticks & colored pencils for her too. Does anyone ever send in extra supplies for the teachers? I was thinking of sending some extra folders and notebooks, I figure the teacher would appreciate them, right?

Our Church missions board gives $25 per child to help families with the cost of supplies and there may be some other programs out there too. I think the school could help us out a little by having the kids clean up the old fashioned way.........good ole soap and water. I do not like the hand sanitizers being used in place of soap and water. Washing up in the bathroom with soap and water would save us a lot of money on hand sanitizers and baby wipes. Those items are expensive and are not teaching kids to wash their hands. Not sure the kindergarteners need to be licking the alcohol off their hands all day long. When I subbed in the Kindergarten class, that was one thing I really had a hard time with. Hand sanitizer should be strickly for the WalMart shopping cart handle, LOL. |
