| Ready for Potty Training???
So for the last couple weeks our 17 month old DS has been pointing to his crotch area often through out the day and we just assume because he's peeing and realizing it now..... Then the other day at my mom's house he was in the bathroom while she was drying her hair and he pointed at the toilet and at his crotch again! Now, keep in mind he is NEVER in the bathroom any other time but to take a bath so we haven't shown him anything at all.... Do you think he's trying to tell us he's ready to potty train? Or maybe something else? |

Yes! Katie, get that boy on the potty! Seriously, Sawyer is potty training right now and does the same thing. As soon as they realize they are going they are ready to start using the potty. Mine were all about the same age when they got potty trained. Do the naked method and you'll be done in like 3 days! It really works! I used it with Tyler!

The naked method is what got us into this mess in the first place! LOL!

I used to work in a daycare and 15 months is not to young at all. I had a little girl who was fully potty trained at 17 months! I say when they are ready they are ready.

The naked method is just that- you let the child run around naked for a couple days! Just make sure you do it at a time when you will be home so that you can be consistent. When they are naked they realize instantly that they have to go and run to the potty. Using this method, my friends and I had our kids trained in about 3 days. It's awesome! As far as too youg, my thought is that as long as they can walk and seem aware that they are going, they should be ready. Just don't push them before they are. It is so frustrating and does no good. Here's some more info: Another commonly cited approach involves keeping a child naked as much as possible for several days in a row. The philosophy behind this approach assumes children do not like to be wet and loose control of their urine. Variants of this approach allow the child to be in underwear but require the child to wear the wet clothes for a while if they have an accident. In order to try this approach, parents must view this as not being a form of punishment for being wet. Parents must allow accidents to occur without getting upset. If a child is allowed to have accidents and not get punished, then a child who is otherwise unaware of their bodily functions can learn valuable lessons. The message for using the toilet to avoid being wet or having an accident is made more evident. Children are allowed to learn by observing and feeling, they begin to understand that urine and stool comes out and they either need to go into the toilet or they will go into the clothes/diaper. This technique can be rewarding for both child and parent since it employs a verThis approach can be very successful, but without also encouraging a child to sit on the potty, it will probably fail. Children do not always equate being wet with not using the potty. Parent instruction is necessary in order to explain that accidents do occur when you do not use the potty. This approach is very similar to potty training in a day, but it spreads the emphasis over several days and allows the child to learn from their mistakes. |

Yeah, Katie and I hijack threads all the time! And yes, Katie, I would get him a little potty. It is much easier. Sometimes they are a little afraid of the big one. |

So do I need to get the potty before we go naked so he gets used to it??? Any suggestions on which ones are better? I did a little looking and this one had good reviews: BABYBJORN Potty Chair - White - BabyBjorn - Babies "R" Us |

I would. I have a Safety 1st we got at WM for $10. No bells and whistles, but you don't really need them. They also have an Elmo one that my other 2 really liked. They thought it was fun to sit on Elmo, so they didn't mind it. Just make sure it has a peepee shield! You WILL get wet!

Yea I was reading a bunch of reviews complaining about how easy the shields came off on some toilets.... I will definitely make sure it is secure, knowing Cody it would be the first thing off |

From what i have been told it sounds like he is ready. I am doing the pre-potty training with my daughter now but probably won't train her for awhile. I put her potty in the bathroom today and let her check it out and try to sit on it a few times. Later I will put her on the potty with her pants down so she gets the idea...if she goes she goes if not she doesn't. At her age there is no need to rush. She is always in the bathroom with me when I have to go...I serioulsy can't escape this child!!! So, I know she is not afraid of the bathroom and today she really started to show interest in the adult potty. It was the first time that she really paid attention when I was going #1 and she watched me flush the toilet and watched the water go down. She is almost 13 months, and I think sometime around Christmas we might try potty training and see how she does. The key I have been told is not to push it and just let them show the signs and figure it all out on their own. Don't get me wrong I would love to have her potty trained as soon as possible, but the goal is by age 2 (if she is ready obviously)

um.... I hate to be a party pooper... but I think your son is too young to start potty training... he's not too young to introduce to the toilet... but to expect him potty trained before he is 2.... unrealisitc IMHO. It is also my pediatrician's opinion -- she told us not to expect a boy to be potty trained until he's closer to 3. If he was a she, I'd say, "go for it!" |

I hate to disagree with LyndaSLP but I know tons of boys that have been potty trained before or right after the age of 2. It all depends on the kid and their personal readiness, some girls won't potty train till later than boys and some boys won't train till later than girls. A friend of mine had her little boy trained, completely 100% by 20 months! So, it can be done, it is just the kid, he was ready when she started. If I could have my daughter trained by 20 months I would be doing a huge happy dance!!!!!

Now DD is a different story! She was introduced to the potty before she turned 2 & did pretty good last fall. Then we went to Disney & it fell apart! The MMO program she was in did nto have a potty in the classroom so it was nto consistent at all! Then in early spring she became lactose intolerant and started having some major blowouts so that totlly messed us up! We seem to finally be back on track & she is now telling us she needs to go "Pee"...She is just so worried she is going to miss something if she leaves the room! She has a little potty that she rarely uses as she prefers the big potty! Intorduce early, but don't have high expectations! JMHO!

I promise I do not have high expectations.... I never even thought about starting this early until his recent behavior.... We'll give it a try and if it works great and if not great! I know it will only work when he is ready |

I'm thinking about starting to train my DD. She'll be 2 next month. We bought the little Baby Bjorn potty and she likes to sit on it but we haven't really started "training" yet. I guess we're pre-training. We are traveling in a few weeks to visit my family so I'd like to wait until we are back before we really get into it. I have a couple of books that I haven't read....guess I better get to it!

Hi Katie... At DD's 1 YR appointment (2 weeks ago) The Pedi told me to buy her a potty and put her on it every morning as soon as she wakes up but not to expect her to actually use it just to get her used to it... I looked at her like she was crazy..I even asked her of she was too young and she said she is not to young to inforce the process of using the potty....but she will probably be closer to 2 when she "gets it" I really do think it's the kid though.. We just bought one yesterday but haven't actually used it yet.. Actually, I forgot to do it this morning... I hope it goes well for you! Tara
