| Out of the Crib
DS 22 months has been climbing on to his Changing Table which is attached to this Crib. Last night we went in and he was stradaling the up/down Rail. This is not the first time it has happened a few times. Well we were worried he would get up there and fall in the night. We took the rail right off and he went to sleep, I laid some pillows there in case he fell. He did fall out of bed and I just put him in bed with us. And then decided to get up at 5:30 ![]() ![]() ![]() How long do they fall out of bed? Should I just put his matress on the floor for awhile? And how long am I gonna have to sit in his room until he falls asleep? This is mind boggling. I really thought he would stay in the crib forever ![]()

Jayden started sleeping in a big bed up at my parents (with rails) one week he was visiting. Since the location was new, he was okay with the new bed idea. When we picked him up a week later he returned to a room with a bed with rails as well. He went into it just like the crib with no problems. It did take a little longer to get him down at night - in the beginning, because he would get out of bed and stand at the gate (gated his door) and we would have to go up, put him back in bed, and leave. He has been sleeping so much better in the bed (kept rolling into the sides of the crib and waking himself up), but it did take a little while to get him adjusted. I am sure with time your little one will adjust and enjoy his new big boy bed

We always used a toddler bed that had rails on it with our boys so that they wouldn't fal out of bed. With our daughter though we started her out on the floor because my Dad wasn't done making her bed for her yet. It will take a bit of time to get him adjusted to sleeping in a bed and falling back to sleep when he wakes up but be patient it will happen.

We just moved our daughter (21 months) into a big girl bed this week. Had to do it when I found her sitting on top of her changing table--just a matter of time before she realized she could climb over the crib rail too! We bought a Serta mattress & box spring from Big Lots--just under $200 after tax for the set. Much nicer than the cheapo set we bought for our son from a discount furniture store. Vinyl mattress cover ($8), waterproof mattress pad ($25), sheet set ($6), and baby gate ($25) from Target. For our son, we took his crib out and used his play pen for a few months while we saved money for his bed and bedding--when he crawled out of that, he didn't have far to fall. For now, we just put the mattress & box spring directly on the floor--no frame yet (waiting for her to get used to it/learn to not fall out!) The first few days, naps and bedtime were really hard--she would stand at the gate and cry, so I nursed her or cuddled her until she fell asleep. Realized I was creating a very time consuming pattern, so I just hid out in my room one night and 45 minutes later, she had crawled up on her bed and fallen asleep! The time it takes her to fall asleep has dwindled each night since--last night she fell asleep within 5 minutes. I felt bad just leaving her in there, but really it's no different than when I left her in her crib--just more wide open space, which she is starting to get used to. Lots of extra straightening up, though--she tosses all her diapers and toys over the gate since she's free to roam her room |

We switched DS when he was 13 months because he would grab the crib rails and jump and we were afraid he was going to jump out. I would have just bought a twin mattress set with rails and shoved it against the wall but grandpa insisted that he have a Sponge Bob toddler bed that took the crib mattress. It was low to the ground but with the rails he never fell. DS out grew it by 3 and then I went out and got the twin bed. DS likes to watch tv when he goes to bed so I always put the cartoon on for him at bed time. If he got out I turned them off so he learned quickly to stay in his bed. In 10 minutes DS is out so I sneak in and turn off the cartoon.

You could always get a noodle (the swimming kind from walmart) and either cover it with fabric or not... cut it to the length of the bed and put it under the fitted sheet along the edge of the bed. It is not so big he couldn't get out of the bed when he needed to, but big enough to keep him from rolling out of the bed when he is asleep. HTH
