Not a good weekend for me.....

Posted 10-18-2009 at 03:01 PM by karren tipton

It all started on Monday, and I had some kind of virus. Stayed home from work and we noticed that our little sheltie, Thunder, was not acting herself. Our vet has evening hours, so I get out of my pj's to go with dh to the vet. Get there and a sign on the door says he is closed until 10/26. Tuesday dh has a doctors appt. at 11:00 and when he gets home, she is worse. Gagging, but nothing coming out and moaning and groaning when she lays down. He calls another vet and asks then what time they take their last patient and they tell him 5:00. It is 4:30 so he loads her up and goes there. When he gets there, they tell him it is going to be awhile, they had overbooked. He said I don't mind waiting. They come to him later and tell him if they see Thunder the staff is going to have to work overtime. He asks, does this mean this is going to cost more, and they said yes. Ultimately we were paying their payroll. Anyway, he says thats OK I will go somewhere else. They then tell him to have her there at 7:30 the next day. So we take her at 7:30 and the dr. is already in surgery. Had to wait for 45 minutes. She examines her and her abdomen is very tender, maybe she has swalled something. The only way to tell is with an xray. OK go ahead and xray. Xray comes back with no obstructions, but her liver is enlarged and two disks in her back are closer together than the others. This could explain the tender abdoment, but not the gagging. Maybe just a coincidence. Left with ABO's and pain meds and instructions to come back in 7 to 10 days if no improvement. We medicate her Wed, and not improvement. I tell dh that it can take 24-36 hours for abo to take effect. She gets much worse on Thurs. and dh takes her back. They give her 4 bps(tracking devices) and tell him to have her back at 7:30 on Friday. We take her and a different vet is working(like him the best anyway). He says we will x-ray her and call with the results. He did listen to her murmur while we were there. Get home and they call by 8:30 to tell us the bps have not moved out of her stomach and they should already be in the colon. They advise either to take her to UT or do exploratory surgery to find out what is going on. We elected the exploratory since she was so bad and may not last for a trip to Knoxville. Get a call at 11:45 that they lost her on the operating table. Vet said she gave no indication, she just flat-lined. He had drained 1 and 1/2 cups of fluid out of her chest cavity when this happened. Since she was already dead, he inspected her organs and found that the lymph nodes to her heart were greatly enlarged, due to trying to help her heart work harder to keep her alive. Also, her spleen, upper stomach and liver had started to turn bluish/purple from lack of oxygen. Her little heart just couldn't go anymore.

Then, my back goes out!!!! Ughh.. so painful. So I started muscle relaxers and pain pills. Today was the worst pain day. I finally put on a Thermacare patch and took a nap. Upon waking, my back is feeling a little better. Still not going to work tomorrow. I haven't been out of my pj's all day and haven't even had a shower!!! Hurt's too bad just to think about it. Please let tomorrow be better for me.

So sorry about Thunder! I have 2 dogs also (maltipoo named Izzie and shepherd/lab mix named Penny). Penny just went through heartworm treatment and we are waiting til beginning of March to retest and make sure they are all gone!

I also lost a parakeet i had for 12 years. These animals break your heart but i couldn't live without them.

    Hope your feeling better!
