Our oldest child turned 4 this morning just after 8:00 am. He is growing up so fast!
He wanted a Brobee birthday theme. (Brobee is a character from the 'Yo Gabba Gabba' TV show on Noggin.) I could not find any Yo Gabba Gabba birthday supplies – I checked Birthday Express, Kmart, Wal-Mart, and Target. Then last Wed. the new Birthday Express catalog arrived, and Yo Gabba Gabba is in it! However, I would have had to pay overnight shipping to get it here in time, so he settled for Spiderman plates & napkins.
I was determined to make him a Brobee cake for his party last weekend. This is how I did it.
You will need:
Cake mix
Frosting: I make homemade but store frosting would work fine. Colors: Black, Red, Light Green, Dark green. My store only had Kelly Green so I improvised, but still came up with decent light/dark green colors.
Frosting bag with #5 tip or several Ziploc bags with a tiny hole cut in one corner of each.

1. Bake a 9 X 13 cake and frost it white.
My cake broke into 3 pieces as I tried to turn it out of the pan – no worries! I just pushed the pieces back together and frosted right over it. (That might not work if you are making a two-layer cake.) I had to stop Papa -- when he saw the broken cake, he started to eat it!

2. Use a toothpick to draw the outline of Brobee. It’s easy to erase and re-draw if you make a mistake.

3. Use black frosting and trace the outline of Brobee with a #5 frosting tip. (I used the #5 tip to do the entire drawing.)
4. Fill in the other colors using the same tip – just wash it in between. Fill in each area with back and forth lines, then use a toothpick to smudge it so the frosting is smoothed over and doesn’t look like rows anymore.

5. I used a toothpick to ‘fluff’ Brobee’s stripes so they look textured, a little like fur.
6. Pipe on your greeting.
7. Enjoy your cake!
This cake was easier and faster than having a shaped pan and using the Star tip. I will use this method again.
