9/16/09 - Big Boy Bed

Posted 09-16-2009 at 06:37 PM by jbarber8

My baby isn't a baby anymore.

Last weekend, we converted Jimmy's convertible crib to a toddler bed. The first night, he was fine. The second night, he fell out of bed twice. I told him, "Don't worry. It happens to me all the time!"

We worried that he'd keep getting up and would not stay in the bed, but he has pretty much stayed in his bed. We had to take him back to bed a couple times each night, but it's been easy so far. He still cries at bedtime (age 2 years+ 4 months). His brother always went to bed happy and wakes up happy - Mike pops out of bed like toast from a toaster! Jimmy is different -- he doesn't want to go to bed at night, and he doesn't want to get up in the morning, either! He might get that from me... I admit I'd like to linger a few more minutes on most mornings. I'm grumpy before coffee, too.

We turned off our baby monitor about a month ago, so I'm glad we found the time to take care of Jimmy's bed. I felt bad that I couldn't hear the boys very well. Now Jimmy can come get me if he needs me.

Our boys have been sleeping through the night for a long time, and yet there is a huge difference in the quality of my sleep since we turned off the monitor. If you are still listening to little ones sleep, when they could get out of bed to find you, I highly recommend turning off your monitor!

I tried to get a picture of Jimmy in his new bed and he was not in the mood. This is what I got:

Ah the Big boy bed! it tugs at my heart strings to read about such things since my babies are 20 and 22. I like to refer to them as the good ole days. enjoy them as they FLY by! As for not being a morning person, you should see me before my first cup of coffee in the morning! My DH always says"Back off boys, she's all mine!" LOL

How sweet. Congrats! DD is the same way (2 yrs 7 m) and always has been she does not like to go to bed and in the morning when she wakes I hand her the milk and she lays in bed until she is in a good mood. DS though (13 m) is prety happy to go to sleep and wakes up happy, so different! I am trying to decide when to put DS in a big boy bed. I had DD in one at 15 m since I needed the crib for DS. But this time I will probably wait until at least 18 m, he still does not even walk.

Yes, there was no rush to get J out of the crib, so he stayed in it about 6 months longer than his brother did. He's 2 years + 4 months now.

His Grandparents are moving shortly and they offered us a twin bed from their guest room when they downsize. We've been waiting for the free bed! Yet with the monitor off, and J being potty trained for 4 months now, he needs to be able to get out of his own bed (My kids never tried to climb out of the crib).

Someone gave us bunk beds for them - I don't think we're quite ready to actually stack the beds just yet. They'll have matching twin beds in two rooms for awhile. Maybe later they'll sleep together in one room and have a separate playroom.

Did the convertable crib come with the bed rail. I didn't see it in the picture but it helps with them not falling out of bed.

My girl (2 yrs 6 months) was in a toddler bed at 17 months since she wanted to potty train then. But she moves aroud alot in her sleep and cries her bed was to small. We could hear her kicking the wlls while she slept. So she would crawl lin bed with her brother (they are 22 months apart).

We moved her to a twin bed in April, (bunk beds). Althought a few nights a week when I check on them (son 4 yrs) she has crawled up the ladder into the top bunk with brother. Of course both bed have the bed rail, but I love that hey are that close.

    Hi Nanell,
No, our crib did not come with a railing. So far, he has fallen out twice, both the second morning within an hour of each other.

    Thanks for posting!
