Alright, this little bitty isn't exactly frugal...but it was so, so good I wanted to share. Sometimes we're looking for something different to shake things up, a splurge item on that menu perhaps? This is your guy! I made this while visiting my sister-in-law and she and her husband almost devoured the entire pan between the two of them.

When I got home, I despaired at the high fat and calorie content.. trust me, this is not a dish for those on a diet! So I decided I would be the brilliant genius who would make this lower cal. I swapped the sour cream for fat free and swapped the cheese for the 2% and it was a huge disaster!! The dish didn't even cook up the same way and the flavor was way, way off. This is one of those recipes were you'll just have to take the hit for that day, trust me.. its worth it!

This recipe calls for 2 3oz bags of real bacon bits. I priced them at $3 per bag for a total of $6 for only 6 oz! If you have bacon on hand, I highly advise you make your own! 16 ounces of decent quality bacon is roughly the same price! You'd only need to cook a few slices.

I'm very brand loyal. I know there is little room for that in couponing but I have a very strong sense of smell and taste and like to stick to what I know works. I used Tilamook cheese which is a local Oregon dairy but I've heard of it being found as far as WI! It is my favorite cheese in the whole wide world, and while you can use your favorite cheese I recommend against using Kraft. I just loathe kraft cheese for all of its flavorless expense and total lack of cohesive melting qualities.

Now I'll step off my brand high horse and continue with this recipe. :)

2 16oz. containers of sour cream
2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese (buy the brick, shred yourself and save big!)
2 3oz. bags of real bacon bits (please people, for the love of any and all gods.. make your own bacon bits, save that money!)
2 packages of Ranch Dip Mix (not the dressing mix, pay close attention to the labels)
1 large bag of frozen hash browns (I used Mr. Dells but I'm sure any brand would work)

Combine the first 4 ingredients in a large bowl, then mix in the hash browns. Spread into a 9x13 pan and bake at 400 for 45-60 minutes.

Serve... that simple!! This dish is very hearty and filling, I served beside naked turkey burgers.. recipe to follow and got rave reviews from the family. I hope you'll enjoy this one! The ranch dip mix can be expensive and I have no experience recreating this with a diy version yet, but let me know how you make this dish more cost effective!

Alright, I'll start of saying that this isn't so much a review as it is more of a perfected series of tweeks on a recipe I found a while ago and had wanted to try. I like to avoid shopping out of season so I needed to wait until the summer months here in Washington to get my hands on those zucchinis at an affordable price.

I grew up eating zucchini from grandmas garden so it is almost always a summer staple for me. The great thing about this vegetable is that you can easily freeze it to keep it on hand throughout the winter months.

This recipe was intended to be a low calorie meal but I found a lot of unnecessary additives to help the flavor and a lot of areas where flavor could have been added but was left lacking. Since I changed the recipe so drastically I'll just post the recipe as it it includes my changes. I want to thank Skinny Taste for the inspiration, as I would have never thought to put zucchini in an enchilada!

2 zucchini, shredded. (2 large zucchinis will make 10 with corn tortillas.)
6 large cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp cumin
3/4 tbsp red pepper flakes (more or less to your tastes, I like a little heat)
olive oil spray (the spray has zero calories but standard oil will work fine)
corn tortillas (this is a matter of preference but corn is gluten free and lower calories, plus I think they taste better)
2 cups of shredded mexican cheese
1 can of green enchilada sauce (I am in the process of experimentation with my own recipe, for now... the can will work and is cheaper than buying all the ingredients which I doubt any of us have on hand)

Heat oven to 400 degrees F.

Spray pan with olive oil and heat garlic for several minutes. Add zucchini, cumin and red pepper and cook for another 5-8 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of cheese.

Pour enough enchilada sauce into the baking dish to coat the bottom of the pan. Stuff tortillas with zucchini mixture, roll and place seam side down in the pan.

Pour a decent amount of sauce over the top of the completed enchiladas then top with remaining cheese. Bake approximately 20 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful this was. You could make this with red enchilada sauce but I'd advise against it. It would clash too heavily with the flavor of the zucchini. I had every single one of these ingredients in my pantry already, including the green enchilada sauce. Remember, tortillas can be kept in a freezer indefinitely! I've been doing this for years! With coupons, I don't think I've ever paid more than .25 for a pack of corn tortillas.

If you had to buy the sauce, the zucchini and tortillas I'd expect a cost of roughly $7 for the entire dish. $10 if you needed the cheese. This would break down to a dollar a serving if we included the cost of cheese but I doubt any of you will need to buy most of this, just the sauce!

Whether your kids love Barbie dolls, Bratz My Scene dolls or Disney's Tinkerbell Ariel with all of the accessories on the games shown here, these games can give your girls a huge creative boost it's amazing watching them reenacting or creating their own interactive stories with the characters when they play these games.
The Nintendo consoles are great, portable fun. They are rechargeable (like cell phones) so you might want to get the travel kit with the car charger!
Also, you can use Parental Controls to restrict the 3D mode for children 6 and under.
3DS DS Games for Everyone
The Nintendo DS or NDS as it's sometimes referred to has a great range of Mario Brothers games which are still everyone's favorites but there are so many other wonderful games to choose from.
Scroll down! Make sure you don't miss YOUR favourite character and feel free to let me know if there is something you're looking for that you don't see here and I'll check up on it right away!
The other thing is that there IS a DS game for everyone. I happen to love Suduko and play it on Brain Age 2 where you can train your brain in minutes a day!! You can also check out, "Left Brain Right Brain" and the "Big Brain Academy" there's even an "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" DS game! There are so many fun and EDUCATIONAL games with brain teasers, word puzzles, mazes and much more that kids of any age DO enjoy.
DS games feature superheroes and many of the kids' favourite toys and characters. There are Disney Princess, Bratz, Transformers, Iron Man, and Superhero games and a wide range of games featuring characters from all their favorite movies.
Take your time and check them both out. and you'll notice there are consoles and bundles of accessories which would probably be the best option for value if you're buying your first DS console.
Cuddly toys and baby dolls are all extemely popular so I've also included the Build a Bear and the Baby games their toys virtually come alive on the screen with all these games!
It's especially a good idea if you're traveling, want some peace and quiet, or maybe even just want to take a lil nap sometimes cuz it seems like the kids are constantly yelling "MOM!!! Can I do . / May I have . You can play 3D games and take 3D pictures with this product which features one interior camera and two exterior cameras.
I hope no one takes offense to my constant reference to these DS games as being "for kids" I know there are many adults who play them (I do myself) but I was initially, specifically, researching games I wanted to get for MY kids and would be able to recommend to their friends. of course, we're all someone's kids anyway so PLAY ON!!
While my kids love being outdoors; running, cycling, swimming, tennis, or even just kicking a ball around in the yard. When they're slowing down, apart from watching TV, they have their iPods and game consoles for those times when they HAVE TO sit and keep still.
The system comes complete with an adjustable stylus, 6 AR cards, and builtin software including Face Raiders, Nintendo 3DS Sound, and a Mii Maker application. The additional advantages of SpotPass and StreetPass allow for a more enhanced wireless experience by enabing access to more exclusive content and connecting with other Nintendo 3DS users.
Obviously I am not a believer in the whole "videogameplayingtimewasting" concept. I did make sure that along with the "fun" games they wanted, I also got a few of the more educational DS games for my girls. We all know too much of ANYthing is bad, so limiting time or enabling kids to learn to use the DS "wisely" is important. If allowed, they will be glued to them when they're on holidays, so when necessary it can also be a privilege that gets taken away when kids are on punishment trust me, it works!

This is one of my all time go to comfort foods. I remember my grandma cooking this dish when I was a child, continuing the tradition, I make this for my own children. There are a lot of different ways to make goulash, but this is how she did it.

1 box bowtie pasta or elbow noodles (really, any pasta will do!)- $1.00 or less, free with coupon
1 lb ground meat (turkey is healthier, but grandma used beef) -prices vary- I used clearance organic beef $2.00/lb
1 bag frozen squash or 2 fresh zucchini when in season -(frozen squash $1.00)
1/2 medium onion, chopped- $.10
3-4 cloves of garlic, minced (adjust to your taste preference)- pennies over time
salt and pepper to taste- pennies over time
2 cans diced tomatoes or 5 fresh tomatoes, chopped (granny used fresh tomatoes, but canned are a pantry staple)- .50 each or free with coupon, free if from your garden when in season!
Oregano and Basil to taste (approx 1 tbsp of each)- pennies over time

Cook the onion, garlic, fresh zucchini (if using frozen, add it in with the pasta to your boiling water) and meat over medium heat until done. Drain off fat. Add tomatoes, seasonings and cook until the flavors mix, approximately 30 minutes.

Toss with pasta and serve. Makes one large pot, plenty to feed a family of 5 generously.

My total cost for this meal was basically the meat, as I had everything else on hand as part of my pantry staples or had coupon-ed it for free. (re: pasta, canned tomatoes) It would probably cost you $6 to purchase all of the ingredients, factoring cost of meat and would be about .60 a serving. Less if you already have these items on hand or can coupon them! Give grandma's goulash a try.
