Saving For Christmas Going As Planned!

YAY! So in the beginning of September, DH and I decided we really needed to start saving for Christmas. Every other year we drive halfway across the country (to Oklahoma) to visit his family. We are just NOW saving money for getting there and back, Christmas gifts (for HUGE families), and new tires because they're looking pretty bad and one would most likely blow if we attempted the trip. Apparently our tires are "low profile" and cost more than other (gr) and this car we now have is going to take a little more gas on the trip (another gr).
September was a tight month (DH got 3 tickets in 1 week!) He has pretty bad luck with the cops and I only got upset over 1. The other 2 were pretty stupid. Anyways... somehow we managed to save $250 in September! In Oct, Nov, and Dec before we leave we've figured up that we should be able to save $600 each month!!! (THANKYOU AFC FOR THESE GREAT DEALS) Without saving on food... that amount would easily be knocked down to $400/month. AND DH gets an extra check in December... $1000!
We are going to have plenty of money when we get home to pay off bills... or at least it looks that way now as long as nothing negative happens. Last trip to OK we ended up using a credit card for gas just to get home! And strugged money-wise for a couple months after. I will be out of a job in January and was extremely worried financially... but this gives me a month (hopefully) to find a new job. (Being laid off at the end of the year... bad timing, right.) It'd be great if i'm kept through at least part of Jan but it's unlikely. But it feels good to know that we will have money saved and for bills when the time comes. We really didn't want to have to cancel our trip since he only sees them every other year.
