Went to TRU over the weekend with my mom she wanted to buy my son a lego. The sale stated that the lego was 89.99. She had a coupon for $10 off if you spend $75 or more. The cashier rings up the transaction, we're checking the receipt in the car this is what it looks like. To me things are getting more strange with stores everyday.

Lego 79.99

Original Price 99.99 - $10 sale
89.99 - $10 gift card = 79.99
+ $10 gift card = 89.99
Total 89.99
Tax 5.40
Total = 95.39

It looks like to me the lego should have been priced at 79.99. If anyone else sees what I see isn't the sale deceiving.

I'm confused.. Did she hand you the $10 GC? Or USE a $10 GC?

i would go back- something went wrong there.. I have the same coupon for the $10 gc with any $75 or more purchase.
It looks like she messed up. your oop should have been $89.99 +tax and you should have gotten a GC for $10 for free.

It looks like she added a GC then subtracted it making the balance the same as if she had never even made that mistake. I think the OOP is correct but you should have received a $10 GC as well.

Sorry I should have written that the coupon was for a $10 gift card if you spend $75. Thats what I get for listening to others at the same time I'm typing. LOL.

I am going to have her call. The lego was supposed to be on sale for 89.99 and you get a $10 gift card with the coupon if you spend $75. The way the lego rang up on the receitp it looks like the lego was on sale for 79.99 and she was charged for the gift card. It shouldn't have been. The register did all the work she rang the lego up, and it prompted for a gift card she scanned that and then gave us the total. The OOP would still be the same but the Tax was on the 89.99, looks to me the if lego rang up 79.99 tax should go on that not the gift card also. Gift cards aren't taxed, at least I've never been taxed on a gift card when I've purchased them alone.

It could be something weird they've been doing to prevent people from returning products and getting free GC's, where they adjust the price of the items. But call and have them tell you. If they screwed up, return it and I'm sure it will be on sale in the very near future.

i work there and they do it that way so that people can not return the item and get a free ten dollar gift card. they charged you correctly its just they have to ring it up that way so that if you return the item you only get back your amount you spent minus the gift card amount... if that makes any sense.

It doesn't make sense at all. Most places make you return the gift card. I purchased something at Target that came with a gift card and I've yet to spend it because its a Christmas Gift and the gift may have to go back along with the card. It just looks to me like they charged me for the gift card and I paid taxes on it which there aren't taxes on gift cards. If anyone has ever bought a gift card alone there isn't any tax on it and seems to me like they're getting one over on customers.

If you look at it.. they added the gift card and then subtracted it off the total.. So your total is still only 89.99 like it should be. Which is what you got taxed on. It looks right to me. And at Target they have a way to show that there was a giftcard with this purchase.

All stores have a way to show a Gift card was given with a purchase and the register recognizes the number on the receipt. I just don't like the way they did this. I know the total would still be the same without having rec'd the gift card, it just looks as though we were taxed on the gift card. The way they did it was just strange.

What's your tax rate? We can figure out what the tax should be on 89.99 and if it's more on your receipt then I'd go back and ask them about it.

6%, I already figured the tax out, it's correct, but I still don't like the way they have the receipt set up. Looks to be like the gift card was figured into the price of the item.

It's to cover them if you try to return the item. I bought like 6 items and used the same coupon and it came off each item. It does look odd and it is hard to read but it's correct. I've never had a place ask for the gift card back when I've done a return, they take it out of the item's value.

I live in Ohio and when we pay .50 for a $10 item we get charged the tax on the full price. that might be the case there. I work at TRU and we have a ton of different screens to go through. One for TRU Q, One for MAN Q's, one for payment and one for ringing up things and adjustments. After everything is rang up we have to scan the Q and it takes $10 off the total price then after we hit the next button to finish up the $10 gets added back on. And allows the GC to be distributed.It's just a paper trail for the GC's. You can post your receipt if you would like and I can take a look.
