Hurricane areas and stockpiles With HT triples and the great Food Lion FLIPs of the past few weeks my freezers have never been fuller. However, I am approaching my second hurricane season (last year was a non-event) and I live less than a mile from the ICW in NC. So what do you do? Do you eat up your stockpile just in case, do you pass up everything except frees and amazing deals or do you just go on as usual. I think I would cry if we lost power and I lost everything in our chest freezer along with our fridge/freezer in our house. Thanks!

I would just go on as usual. IF a hurricane does hit, you could always have a community BBQ with your meat from the freezer when the storm passes!

You could keep an eye out for a generator. Also, I agree with Mandiedq, go on as normal. You can't live in the what-if world, it'll make you crazy. Cross all bridges as the come. IMO.

We live in Louisiana.. we have 2 generators! Saves our fridge every time! :0)...we have also just cooked it all and shared... neighbors are hungry during those times.. and food is comforting!

I also live in eastern NC on the outer banks and we just bought a generator today. Did you know that through Saturday (May 31st) Virginia has tax-free buying on all hurricane supplies and that includes generators, batteries, bottled water, etc.

I live in Greenville NC and we are considering buying a generator just for this reason. Given the fact that we just got hit with a tornado last week, albeit a small one, we don't want to take any chances.

Living in Florida (and as the Louisiana PP said) makes you want to stockpile just a little. I stock up on cans, batteries and the like. But I do continue to buy my normal groceries as well. I simply just buy extra for the hurricane season. HTH!

We too live in Louisiana and a part of our hurricane pack is always charcoal so we can cook our meats when we are without power. We are always without power far after the storm is passed and we gotta eat some how.

If the freezer is full it should hold the cold for about 2 days..1/2 full for about 1 day. I replace anything that I remove with a bottle of frozen water or juice if my stockpile is good. This keeps the freezer full. Unfortunatley during these types disasters 2 days is usually not enough time to get power back on. If you could get dry ice that is also an option but I'm sure that is one of the first things to go.
