Color Blindness.....how can you tell with a toddler? I think my friend's son may be color blind and he won't be 4 until May. I know for a fact that his 9 yr. old cousin is ( his Mom is one of my best buds). Is there a test we could try?

See if he can differentiate between red and blue. Ask him what colors he sees. Most boys whom have blue eyes are color blind. I was worried with my son, until I did the color test with him. Good Luck!!!

The doctor suspected my baby when she was 12 mos might be cross eyed when she looked at something close up. So I took her to the eye doctor. I didn't even know you could do an eye exam on a baby but he did. And he was really great. I was actually laughing because of the tricks he did to get her to look this was and that. It ends up that she has a large bridge on her nose and she'll just probably outgrow it. Maybe they just need to do an eye exam, maybe even they could do it at school?

I think there is some kind of test where they look at a color....if you are color blind you won't be able to see for example the bug in the picture, and if you aren't you will see it. Something like that.

LisaArbo is right. The "professional" test for color blindness includes a colored photo with a hidden picture or word that people who are colorblind cannot see. Ishihara Test for Color Blindness Color blindness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If it's a boy and his mom is color blind, then he is definitely color blind. It's genetically linked on the x chromosome. If his mom isn't color blind he can still be color blind because it's a recessive trait. Here's a link for a test for color blindness. http://www.toledo-bend.com/colorblind/Ishihara.html This one might be better for a toddler though..because it has shapes instead of numbers. http://colorvisiontesting.com/online%20test.htm Hope this helps!!!

I can't find anything online to support that statement. The only thing the online sites keep stating is "More prevalent in males". |

I was wondering about this statement as well. I have 3 sons, all with blue eyes, and none are color blind.

My son has blue eyes also -- which is why I went googling for information. My son has been to the eye doc 2-3 times and no mention of concern due to his eye color. I think it is all genetic based, not eye color based.

My son is also blue eyed and has been to the eye dr 2 times and he's not 4 yet. There was never a mention of his eye color being an issue. He's fine and has perfect vision.

It is more prevalant in boys because it's an x linked recessive trait. Meaning that women need 2 recessive genes to be color blind (because women have 2 x chromosomes) and men only need 1(because they have 1 x chromosome and 1 y chromosome). Eye color has nothing to do with color blindness. It's all genetic.

Call your pediatrician ~ he will know if there is a test. I remember wondering if my kids were. Especially when they are learning the colors and goof them up. My youngest learned her colors because brother and sister played "punch buggies" with mommy & daddy! When we would call one she would perk up and say "where? where?" and before we knew she even knew what they were she said "red punch buggie" and sure enough! It is far more common for boys than girls to have it ~ my grandfather had it.

I am curious about my daughter, granted she is only 8 months old. But my husband (her father) and his dad (her grandfather) both have some version of colorblindness. In my husband it is different shades of blue, he can't distinguish between any shade of blue, they all look the same to him, and my FIL it is red/green. I know we will find out when she is older but I was wondering about it the other day as I was reading her a book about colors.

| Hcsig, is YOUR father colorblind? Or do you have colorblind brothers? If not, more than likely, you daughter wouldn't be colorblind, she would just be a carrier of the colorblind gene. It is carried on the X chromosome. | <
