| Sales Tax Question
I live in NC. I went to Dollar General tonight and bought 10 boxes of Electrasol at $2.50 a box and used my 10 $2.25 coupons, making my total $2.50. They charged me $1.69 sales tax, which I assume would be the tax I would have spent if I paid full price. Shouldn't I only pay tax on what I actually spent (at 7%, would have been around $.20)? I ended up paying over 50% sales tax. I discussed with the manager and she didn't budge and I hate to spend so much time on less than $1.50, but this really BUGS me! She also tried to tell me after the fact that they shouldn't have accepted 10 coupons because it is one coupon per purchase and I should have only been able to use 1 coupon, which is bull! Thanks for your help! |

The store manager was right and wrong! She was right in saying that you do pay tax on the full price of the items, but she was wrong in saying they could only accept 1 coupon. If the coupon states "1 per purchase," it means for each item purchased, which is different from "1 per transaction." Even so, you still did an awesome job and got a great deal on 10 boxes! Congrats! |

Here's what I recently discovered about the tax thing at my Target. When the huggies target coupon was out they were only letting us do one per transaction. So I told the cashier to ring them up seperate... but what she did was ring up two tubs of wipes then the coupons, two more wipes and then coupons and so on. I was only charged the tax on the final amount not the entire order!! So there might me a trick to it! I haven't gotten to try it again since.

| Welcome to the wonderful world of taxes!! I can't speak for other states, but here in NC, you are gonna pay tax on the original price. It is that way with all purchases here when you use Q's. It just became more focused because the Q was a large $$ amount!! Regardless of what the Q said, the Manager rules, unless you get Corporate involved and usually, the Manager STILL rules!! Right or wrong, unfortunately. That is why every store's coupon usage is YMMV! I may come in right behind you and what you weren't able to use Q wise, I may be able to an vice versa!! Sorry...........obviously I am not the bearer of good news!! |

Sorry, you didn't find a trick. You didn't get charged tax in that case because it was a store coupon. When the store removes the payment by coupon, they are not required to charge the tax because they are basically giving you a direct discount with their coupon. They do not get reimbursed for it, it just lowers the selling price. The OP's coupons were manufacturer's Q's which the store gets reimbursed for. Since the store is still getting paid the full amount (in cash & Q's), you are responsible for the tax on the full amount. The manufacturers Q is in essence just another method of payment & the transaction is still taxable. Hope this makes sense....... PS - Don't know where you live in NC, but in the Triad area we are about the have a get together on Feb 2nd at Bob Evans in Greensboro. Come join us at 1pm if you can! Here is the thread about the gathering...... http://www.afullcup.com/upload/chit-...t-feb-2nd.html Last edited by kvilledrummer; 01-25-2008 at 09:08 PM. Reason: Add invite |

Most coupons actually state on them that you are to pay all applicable taxes. Even times that I have used coupons and should not have owed anything, I have still had to pay the sales tax. It may depend on the coupon used, but looking at just a few in front of me, most state on it that you pay applicable taxes.

I used to know this but may have forgot. To my knowledge here in tennessee the tax is taken off of food items, but in the case of double coupons the part that is doubled we have to pay tax on.All non-food items, tax must be paid on the regular (before coupons) price.

Thanks to all who responded! I was just so excited because this was the first time I had a major discount due to coupons, so the difference was very noticeable. Usually I am spending $50.00 and using $10.00 worth of coupons, so I had never noticed that they were charging me tax on the whole $50.00. I just have to smile and remind myself I still got an awesome deal as I go to load my diswasher again and again and again!!!
