My parents just bought a new home and have furnished it beautifully through craigslist. It takes a little work but it can be done. Especially if you seek out people living in high end areas.

Did you know you can bargain with furniture stores? The best ones to work with are locally owned stores where they can make better deals. Also check around September lots of furniture stores are getting their new inventory and sell the old stuff at a discount. You could also get a job at Pottery Barn their employees get 40% discount. My bosses wife worked there for a couple of years to get the stuff she wanted and I swear they should have sent her a 1099 for the savings she got because she didn't work enough hours for the amount she got knocked off of her purchases. One day she called me and said 'you need a new couch it will be delivered to the shop tomorrow'. It was a $ 2,500.00 couch she got for $ 300.00 after all the discounts. And yes it is in my living room she couldn't pass up the deal.
