| coupons for HE washers??
LUV my new HE washer, but don't love the price of detergent! I use just the least amount I can get by with. Anyone know of any coupons or sales or good ways to save on that? You can't use regular detergent, which is sad because you can find lots of good deals on that. Don't even know if CVS or any of those stores carry detergent for them.

You can look around most detergents are now HE. I don't think I have even been able to get non-HE detergent lately.

A lot of the detergents make an HE version. Purex has an HE version, Wisk has an HE version, All, etc. The only ones I know of that don't have HE are Xtra and Ultra.

great post, I have had an HE w/d for a few years now and you shouldn't even use liquid detergent in them....the he w/d's do not use enough water to completely get the liquid out of the hoses so it is best to use powder since it dissolves and does't cause a build up that will start to stink after time

I use Purex HE or Arm & Hammer HE which both go on sale/have coupons pretty regularly. You're right though, CVS/Wags never seem to carry the HE versions. I have to get them at Harris Teeter. One time I mistakenly bought some non-HE Purex at CVS and lost the receipt and the manager at Harris Teeter was nice enough to let me exchange it there for the HE version.

When Walgreens and CVS have the Purex on sale, they almost always have the HE version for that same sale price. Much less expensive than it used to be. As for your HE washer starting to stink? Most odors with this type of washer come from keeping the door closed when not in use. The machine is so air tight that if you keep the door closed it will get mildew-y smelling. Simply leave the door open unless you're running laundry through it and you won't have a problem! |

| LMAO it uses water just not as much as the old ones do and it uses less electric, it is suppose to use $17 a year worth of electric for an average family of 4. I love my HE w/d

Well I must be the odd duck then because when I use powder detergent or Oxy stuff it never dissolves in the slots if I use cold water. I have always used liquid. I leave my door open all the time too and I run a clean cycle every couple weeks.

Now I have something to research ![]() I know when I was in the army our barracks were given new "water saver" washing machines. We were told to not use powder as it wouldn't dissolve in the amount of water the machine used. A few people used powder and the machines died pretty quickly cause it gummed everything up. |

I've had an HE washer for 6 years and I can tell you from my experience. Right after you take the load out leave the door open for a bit. The water and and any other moisture will dry and you'll have no stinky washer. A few times I shut the door right after and the washer stank afterwards. HTH.

I have a top loading he w/d and love it because I don't have to worry about the stink if I close the w lid with that said, I was told by several stores I can use regular detergent as long as I use half as much because he detergent is specially made to not produce as much suds.

I've had mine for 18 months and never had trouble finding HE detergent at any of my stores. I got a bunch of Tide at CVS, Target & Jewel, and All (can't remember where, it's been awhile, probably CVS.) Those are the only 2 I use, so I don't know about other brands. I am too afraid to use regular detergent in mine--it isn't worth the risk to me. There are warnings all over it about using HE detergent (I still use less than the bottle says) and they warned me when I bought it and when it was installed that the detergent formulas are different. I my HE machine!

Purex HE is on sale this week at RA for 1.97 for a 50oz bottle. If you have the 1.00 q from a few weeks ago, that's a pretty sweet deal! Got 7 today!

hmmm...you all are making me wander, maybe they were saying that powder was better than using non he detergent...oh well I haven't noticed any powder problems so maybe I will go buy the stuff that I can get for a lot cheaper with sales and my coupons.

You do not need HE detergent for an HE washer, you just use less detergent. I am pretty sensitive to detergent smells (even the no smell ones have an effect on me). There was no way I would have gotten a HE washer if I would have needed to switch detergents. I use a little less than one tablespoon of regular powder detergent in my HE and it works great. You want to use enough to get the clothes clean but if you use too much it will really bubble up and make a mess (I have never had that happen, that is just what the washer people told me). So start small and add more in future loads if you feel it is needed. I have a front loading LG HE washer, I do about six-8 loads a week and use a box of detergent about every 4-6 months...at that rate I could use really expensive detergent and it would still be dirt cheap to do laundry (another benefit to using regular detergent)!
