| butter!
Is anyone else stocking up on the butter at 1.99 a pound? We go through a pound a week here, just from regular use and everyone thinks I'm bananas! I bought 30 lbs yesterday and 20 last month too!

If I remember correctly...butter should be at it's lowest ( $1.99 ) through January. And, yes...I am stocking up. $1.99 is a lot better than $3.29 in the summer months.

Yeah... It seems you can only find qs for Land-o-Lakes butter...and then, for about 50-cents. Well...L-o-L butter is priced at 4.69 a pound most of the year. My grocery will double a 50-cent coupon. So that makes it 3.69 on a good day. Even the cheapest pound of butter at the Kroger is still upwards of 2.69 on a really REALLY good day. Aldi's, on the other hand, will prolly keep butter at about $1.99 through the cold weather months. Then, it will start to go up. During the height of summer...expect it to go up to about 3.29 a pound...which, for me, is still the best deal in town all year-round.

For baking, you prolly can use maragine instead of butter. The end product may not be as "rich" tasting...but, most tastebuds can't tell the difference in the short-run unless you have both side-by-side. And, in recipes that have other "fats" in the ingredients ( like nuts, and nut-butters ), it's prolly even less noticable. For stove-top recipes... Well, I can smell the difference before I even taste it. And, margarine - due the water content - will not brown as well ( or as quickly ) as butter. Try it with french toast. ( ICK! Soggy french toast is the worst! ) My brother has a grudge against butter; "It's too hard to spread when it come straight out of the frig. wah, wah, wah" "Well, dear dufus brother, don't put it in the frig!" "OMG! Are you kidding me? Without refrigeration, it will go rancid!" "You're kidding me, right? A stick of butter can set on the counter for days before you need to worry. It's a FAT. And besides! When has a stick of butter OR margarine lasted more than two days in this household?"

I LOVE butter- just call me Julia Child. I bought as much as my fridge could hold when it was 1.69/pound at Aldi. Even though I love butter, my TV boyfriend Alton Brown (Good Eats) claims that butter flavored shortening tastes more buttery in baked goods, but you have to adjust the moisture in the recipe to account for the fact butter has water and shortening does not. I'm going to stock up on butter again once I am through making brioche this weekend. Yummmm brioche. Last edited by Foxykelly; 12-09-2011 at 10:02 AM. |

Fun thread! All this talk reminds me of the Paula Dean parody where they made butter on a stick. Paula Deen's Butter Popsicle We stocked up too, but only about 10 boxes. I'll probably get a few more before Christmas for baking.

LOL @ butter popsicle! My daughter the weirdo will eat a stick of butter like a candy bar. In fact she prefers it. My grandfather and my mother both like butter like that and I had no idea. (I was adopted just met my bio family in june) I think its gross LOL. I'm ok with butter spread (I like brummel & brown) but i noticed real butter is far better for cooking! YUM!

| butta?
No way! Not me! I have 4 sticks of butter in the freezer- got a package for .50 once. And I have 30 tubs of Margarine in the freezer that I got for nuthin. Best Life and LOL are frequently $1 on sale at Shoprite, and there is always a Q out for .50 (which doubles to $1). I have enough for a year. I rarely use the stuff, so it lasts a while. I bake only occasionally (try not to keep any fattening stuff around the house, you know?) and use olive oil or veg oil to cook. |

As I'm reading this, I'm watching Saturday Night Live. During weekend update, they said that there is a butter shortage due to Paula Dean! That was quite the coincidence!

I wish I could find butter for $1.99. For anyone wanting to use margarine instead of butter in baking, I found the Land of Lakes margarine has less water and more oil so the baked product is bigger. I made some of my crescent cookies, that are butter, flour, vanilla, nuts and water and they did great with the LOL margarine. Of course those cookies don't need to rise, but the taste and crunch were perfect. I just purchased some I Can't Believe it's not Butter sticks because of the $1.50 coupon and I plan on using it with the real unsalted for my other cookies and breads.
