 I love AFC... and lesson learned.
So... I have only belonged for just under a month... I've become a little OCD regarding my coupons, but I am saving quite a bit... When I started, I had checked into and registered with a couple different savings forum groups... I am now an official AFC addict. Nothing so far compares. The people are great and the forums are wonderfully helpful and informative... However, this is not the main purpose of this post... I wanted to share the most valuable lesson I have learned so far here... At first, I was so caught up in the deals that I overspent. Now I know in order to stockpile, in the beginning you will spend more... this makes sense. But I was spending money over my budget for good deals that wouldn't need to utilized for a few months. So... I was reading the Stockpiling 101 (I think that was the forum link...) and a person had written this in their post... (I can't quote, cuz I can't find the thread now... but this is the general idea...) There will always be good deals, and they are cyclical... If you don't catch the deal this time around, there will be more deals tomorrow or next week. (I didn't do the "poster" justice with my wording... but it's the idea) This runs through my head everytime I see a deal I just gotta have because it's an AWESOME savings, but I don't have the extra money to spend on it... It has saved my budget, several times over already... THANK YOU AFC!!!

Very good point! When I started, almost a year ago I was addicted to the CVS deals. I would do a deal just to rack up ECBs, but it wa snto stuff I needed to stockpile or needed right then. Also back then the CVS Qs were plentiful. Now I do CVS when there are good deals I need, but basically stick to my grocery deals. Right now I am focusing on Christmas deals.

well said! I was really into getting cvs deals at first, too, but now, I get in on the ones for items I need (like Pampers or paper towels), and I used the ecbs to get grocery items that I would pay $ for at Wal-mart.

You got the idea! Make a list...mental or written...of items that are your must haves, then you can help your self focus on what you really need and the rest can just fall away.

That's the lesson I am trying to tell my self these days. Just because I don't have the money now doesn't mean it will never happen again. I'll get a stockpile one day. LOL Thanks for writing it.....helps to see it sometimes

Thanks for posting this! I agree about this stie. I have been using coupons for a year, and find the best information/deals on this site! And, I too have gotten caught up in the deals. I started to spend more than I could afford. So I stopped and thought " there will be plenty more and probably better deals coming!" Thanks again! |

Good post! And great lesson learned! I'm new too and trying to build a stock-pile, but I don't want to go crazy! I'm mainly focusing on grocery deals right now...

I learned that lesson the hard way too  it takes so getting used to to pass up deals, but is so worth it when you find another deal and have the money budgeted for it.

Wow! I am so glad to have read this! I am only three days into being a member, and am spending every spare moment trying to take in all the knowledge here... . This will surely help me to at least be aware of the tendency to go overboard! Thank You! I love AFC!

Bumping because I love this thread. Also - about focusing on grocery deals: it's so easy to find drugstore deals on soap and shampoo and deoderant and such, but to me, compared to what I spend on food; drugstore type items pale in comparison. So, yes, now that I've got enough body soap to last for a year, plus gifts, (and some more stuff, too), I'm going to concentrate MUCH more on grocery deals. After I buy 3-4 bottles of Garnier shampoo at CVS, that is.

| Very good insight!!  Thanks for sharing your learning experience! My biggest problem is getting to the places where the deals in order to create a stockpile. I live in the middle of nowhere, so it's difficult to find time to hit the hot spots as it would take up my whole day, but I guess once or twice a month I'll give it a try.
