Does anybody have any experience with vertigo?

I'll try and make an extremly long story short. DH had to go to the ER a couple Saturday's ago because he was extremely dizzy (so dizzy he couldn't even sit up, let alone stand) and vomiting (which had gotten to the point that he was just bringing up water). The ER doctor diagnosed him with vertigo, hydrated him, gave him some pills and a scrip and we came home. He was on and off thru the weekend and has been perfectly fine until tonight when it happened again (not the ER, just an attack).
We have an appt with a neurologist on Oct 30th. Does anyone know what to expect? Like what kind of tests they'll do or what I should be asking? I know to ask about Meinere's disease, which a few people in his family have. The ER doctor didn't think it was that because he did not have all the symptoms.
Also, does anyone have any tricks (for lack of a better word) to help him deal while he's having an attack? Right now, he just tries to lay down with his eyes closed, but that doesn't always work.
Any info at all would be helpful. Thanks so much!
