Double coupons just means that they double it. If it's worth 50cents, it would be $1. Most stores that double coupons regularly it just comes off automatically at the register when they scan your coupon.
I go to Harris Teeter and they double all the time up to $1. Most stores do not double is what I've found. I'm in NC.
