Ever been to Wal Mart?  But seriously, a lot of stores are doing it to cut back on labor costs and given Aldi's bare bones theme, it fits right in. In our stores when the line gets too big , the cashier will hit a button that is linked to a buzzer that sounds throughout the whole store, signaling they need help and within a minute or two there will be another lane open.
Also if you can plan your trip to Aldis, try to schedule around their busy times such as lunch hour, rush hour after work, Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturdays.I have found the stores to be more manageable outside those times.
